little house on the praire

I posted before about we where having a new cat come to live with us. Well after three weeks we've had breakthrough they have been cuddled up sleeping together today, it seems they only fight when mine winds the new one up. Its gone much better than expected and I've got them both eating the same kind of cat food and trained him not to go on the work units which he did first week

I'd love to know how you managed that in 3 weeks.

Mine have been fighting for 4 years but one week together in the cattery and they came out all loved up - if I'd known that I'd have booked the little sods in ages ago lol!

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

That's great, well done.

It is a little unrealistic to expect all cats to just get along. People can't manage it. I'm glad they have found a way of living together.

get them used to each others smell and try not to give one more attention. I had seperate food and litter trays but they both use the same one now. Also if its a kitten your old cat may look after it or ignore all its boisteriousness

Cats do like their territory and will display behavioural problems when confronted with something that threatens that. Maybe it's easier for a male and female cat to be together or two females, but two males could be problematic.

If it was me, I wouldn't have more than one cat in case they started weeing in the house and there's no way I'd have cat pee on my carpets. I've been in homes where this has happened and they couldn't get rid of the smell of the cats. Apparently I was told you have to use a special type of cleaner as some cleaning products react with the cat urine and cause further bacteria and the strong smell is hard to get rid of. I do like cats but I'd be concerned as to smells

this new one hasn't had one accident neither did my new one. Soon as I got them I put habit of cat litter in my hand and got them to smell it and then sat them in the litter tray, worked for me, I can't stand the smell of cat wee either I'd have to buy new carpets

Ive always had cats and male or female have never pissed on the carpets, what I will say is Tomcat piss is strong, and cats need to be neutered.

She is iin a new home past couple of weeks....move back to England will not be good for them.....or me I fear.....none of us have ever lived in a town, but at least I have a little road sense

they are now dotted about the Islands here where they can still run around unhindered annhialating rabbits, gulls, geese, polecats etc etc

I have two 8 year old cats and got a male kitten a year ago. My male cat treated him like a little brother, playfighting but also lots of cuddles and washes. My female cat beat the crap out of him if he had the audacity to enter the same room as her. Laugh a minute that was

But yeah even the grumpy bitch mellowed eventually lol

I did have a female cat for 18 years but she died 10 years ago. She never had a litter tray, she always went out, she never wandered either, she just stayed in the garden or on the wall. She was spayed though.

I don't remember her ever having an accident. I had her at home with my parents and she moved into my own home with me. It is mice for cats to have a playmate but the territory and dominance thing always worried me so I never had another cat with her

In my experience male (neutered) cats accept new cats much better than female cats.

All the female cats I have had wouldn't accept a new cat in the house but all the boys have been very good about it.

Also if you do have trouble with peeing try Weeaway or Urineoff, both great products for killing the cat pee smell.

Arse End of the Universe, Cumbria

I'm getting a new cat a week on Friday so I've got weekend to referre fights and be around for them, I've booked the Monday off work too. Have bought new cats in before and it's a tense coupla weeks but only ever had to send one back and that was one with lots of issues who unfortunately ended up having to be put to sleep. Travis is a year old male coming from a foster home with other cats and my Smudge is 12 yo female...watch this space for postings from a fraught Caz when they meet up!
