Pub to open at motorway services.

Unbelievable? But true...

JD Wetherspoons have successfully applied to open a pub at the Extra Service Area on the M40 at Beaconsfield, Bucks.

Here's the link the story on the BBC news website.. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-22760874

Is this putting a rather irresponsible level of temptation in front of drivers, or another 'welcome addition to the customer experience' at a motorway service area...

Discuss, dear Forumites... I'm off to resurrect my Victor Meldrew impression.. (I don't BEEE-LEEEEVE IT!!)

Apart from the fact I don't like that JD Wetherspoons have become the Tescos of the pub trade I don't really see much wrong with it,they much about the food than the drink

You see many pubs along the way while out in the car, having one at a motorway service station is'nt going to make much difference to me,if people want to drink then its easily obtainable anywhere

I thought some service areas already served alcohol or is it just the non alcoholic stuff.

I bet the police are hanging around waiting to breathalyser people

I agree. I have seen lots of fruit machines and arcade games at service stations and never been tempted, except for the dancing ones

There a plenty of Harvesters and the likes just off service stations, so maybe its just there for a cheaper range of food than some of the slop some service stations class as food and better and possibly cheaper than paying for a McDonnalds/burker king?

Having said that the only food that comes to mind when I think is a greasy plate of an all day breakfast I'm sure they do other stuff but haven't been in one for a long time.

Do you know I've seen loads of pubs built next to roads. How these car drivers ever get to work without stopping off for a pint or six of Adnams Old Speckled Horsepiddle I don't know.

No. Driver should take responsibility for them selves and not drink. It's not really that hard to do is it? If we keep legislating for idiots we will have a country full of idiots

The more I've been thinking about this, the more I am coming round to the idea now.

It's true there has been alcohol available at service areas for years in the restaurants etc, so there's really no difference to it being in a pub setting.

As it's Wetherspoon's who will be running it too, I would imagine it's going to be run as professionally as it's possible to be (they don't suffer fools easily!) and the eyes of the local licensing dept and the Police will be on it 24/7.

Might even stop there ourselves if we're on our way to W.Brom sometime soon...

I've been trying to work out how this loophole exists.

It doesn't seem at all sensible.

The problem is that people think we shouldn't be able to think for ourselves and so we have to legislate for everything. Soon they will be telling us how long to shit for

honestly dont see it as a problem..

if people wish to drink and drive they dont need to pop in for a pint at the spoons on the motorway, do they..?

it will probably be more monitored by the Police and the staff than most pubs in the UK which some drink drivers tank up in..

Actually, it's not the drivers I am worried about so much. It's the stop offs made by coach loads of already d*unk women on a hen party or men heading back from the sporting fixture weekend away.

Used to live overseas. It was common place to have beer in the fridge, bottle opener on the counter and even patio furniture on the forecourt so that you could enjoy a drink whilst the car was filled for you.

strange times but I miss them

Knowing that servicrs well, I would imagine the main reason for putting it there is the hotel that is there, and the masses of lorries parking up over night.

Its also well used by coaches heading to the north and south.

So if they maintain their normal happy prices they will clean up and make buckets of cash.

It gets a
