I brought up a similar topic on oral sex causing throat cancer a while ago in the Scotland forums and it was rubbished, but there is evidence out there that throat cancer is on the increase due to oral sex . |

from macmillans website......
There is some evidence to suggest that people who smoke and have HPV are more likely to develop cell changes that can lead to cancer than non-smokers who have HPV. If you know you have HPV, or even if you don’t know, stopping smoking may help to boost your immune system.
also says..
The body’s immune system is usually able to get rid of an HPV infection, and for most people infections come and go without causing any problems. |

That's fine, but the person I quoted said smoking can cause hpv. No it can't.
Like any infection or virus it can be worse if u have anything that weakens ur immunity like smoking or diabetes. |

He has actually denied saying it this morning according to the bbc, even though the Guardian has a taped interview of him saying it was caused by cunnilingus.
How he knows exactly what caused it is amazing!
And am I being cynical in thinking he just wants to get in the news due to being in a new film and has one or two due to be released? |

"One third of people diagnosed with throat cancer are infected with a form of the HPV virus, a study suggests.
HPV (human papillomavirus) is the major cause of cervical cancer, and the virus is known to spread through genital or oral contact.
Actor Michael Douglas is reported to have spoken about the link after his own diagnosis with throat cancer.
Experts said this study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, which quantifies the link, showed "striking" results.
There are more than 100 types of HPV. Most people will be infected with HPV at some point, but in most the immune system will offer protection."
