This is what I think! I always weigh my bags before I leave to go anywhere. The excess baggage charges are normally on tickets/airline websites |

Because there's a limit you've paid for (which can be increased beforehand) and you're expected to stick with it? 
I'm a talented packer and even as a female will only use up to 16kg with a 20kg limit and even lighter coming back.
I'm sometimes shocked at the amount of excess baggage people up with. One couple I remember both DOUBLING their baggage allowance (over 40kgs each) and were moaning about how much they had to pay! I mean, what have you put in there!!!

This is not exactly headline news.
Low Cost / Budget airlines have been doing it for years and it has been highlighted so, so many times that I fail to believe that people don't know about it.
Read the carriers T&C's - they are always available on their websites
Pack within your limit or book extra luggage allowance in advance
Stop chancing it - they are well aware that people do this and have checks in place to prevent it.
No one is being robbed
Those that do get charged are victims of their own naivety / ignorance

It is set that high for a reason - to stop people doing it again !
If you do fly Ryanair again, I bet you will pack a bit lighter
What you will find though is that such practices are not unique to Ryanair
Other airlines doing similar are Easyjet, Jet2, Monarch, Thomas Cook, Thompson, FlyBe and more
The legacy carriers such as BA are also adopting this model on their short haul flights too so just make sure you know what you are booking before you press the button. |

They will price it as a deterrent. If everyone packed too much they would need more fuel, or not be able to carry the extra weight. |

If you have booked with Ryanair, you have two options to pre-book hold baggage
one is 15 kilo, the other 20 kilo
if you have booked neither, all you have is a 10 kilo cabin baggage allowance - and here is the real killer
that 10 kilos has to fit into a bag no bigger than 55 x 40 x 20cm
turn up at the airport with a cabin bag bigger than that and there is a chance it will be put in the hold at a cost to you of £60 (per flight) |

i thought it was another o'leary publicity stunt, a bit like the paying for the loo and introducing planes with seats removed to allow for a standing area ? |

Oh I've watched with amusement people turning up with trunks and then kick off as they've exceeded the weight restrictions.

I have never flown with Ryanair or Flybe. If I'm going on a package holiday I always book with Thomson and it's 20kg hold luggage. I've never been charged excess baggage.
It is a lot of money agreed but the cheaper the flight, they will make money elsewhere.  |
