My daughter fell and dislocated her knee on Saturday night, we went to hospital she was dosed up to the hilt, but in a screaming fit she actually managed to put the knee back in herself. We were sent home same night had one hell of a job getting her in and out of car without her waking up the whole neighbourhood !!
Two days on and it's no better both of us are both mentally and physically tired, she has to sleep sitting up with leg in a splint all propped up.
A trip to the toilet is an hour return. And we have got to get her to the fracture clinic on Wednesday, she is dead weight to carry and because of learning needs she finds co-ordination a problem so the crutches are more hindrance than helpful !!
Has anybody ever done this to their knee if so what is the best way forward because i am finding this so hard and often in tears away from my daughter !! |

I was put through a glass table and completely messed up my knee...Your knee is the longest to heal and it will take time.. All I can suggest is rest and a wee bit of moment to stop it from seizing up..it's not a nice injury but it will get better with time...sorry I was not useful...it might be wise to take Her back to hospital if things don't improve let the docs take a look...x |

I did my ankle Tib/Fib fracture and knee when I fell off a ladder , took me 11 months. It's hard work getting healed up. But hopefully it will settle Down for your daughter soon, lots of TLC needed, my auntie looked after me and she said it was hard work, constant pain, restlessness and overdosing on meds. |

As a lot of others have said you are limited to what you can do. It is a long and painful process. Make sure you keep giving her the pain killers regularly to build them up in her system. The spasms are the worst part. |

ask your doctor or the fracture clinic to organise patient transport....then you'll have help with her......also see your GP about more effective pain relief at night......and ask for an occupational therapist to visit...she may be able to help with toileting aids....or a commode to use temporarily...hope this helps xx |

Knees are a nightmare. Loads of ice sessions help but only for the first 48 hours. 20 mins on and off. I can't PM you due to filters but when it comes to pain relief if she's on 2 kinds, stagger it. Stairs work well on your bum too. |

So sorry this has happened. Each hospital should have a LD nurse (learning disability liaison nurse) to help you and your daughter. Ring the hospital tomorrow and hopefully they will arrange transport , less waiting time for you and they will put in place a care plan. If they don't insist on it and say you will raise a safeguarding alert if not. PM me for additional details. Hope all goes well x |

I had a traumatic impact dislocation nearly 4 years ago. So I know exactly wot your going through. If the nhs won't provide a wheelchair there are charitable groups you can hire them from. My best advice is once the swelling goes down get a decent knee brace, preferably from a sports injury place who can give advice on the type needed and buy 2. Physio will be hard and painful but has to be stuck with. Certain pain killers are like sweets and if its codine based ones make sure there 30/500. Any other questions please feel free to pm me. Hope this helps a little. Best wishes tigger

Thank you all so much, I didn't even know that there was such a person as a "Disability leiason nurse" I will be making some calls tomorrow about equipment and also as my daughter can not do stairs at this time instead of sleeping on the sofa in an upright position i will bring her bed down. Hopefully it will at least take some of the stress away from me and the tears!! |

It is still early days, ask the doctor for stronger pain relief and ask for a wheelchair, i Dislocated my knee playing football and it is extremely painful. Unfortunately, heat, ice, pain relief is all you can do, then gentle exercise until physio. Also you could ask your Dr for some home respite to give you all a hand. But keep on at them to get what you need. I hope she heals quickly and you all get rest soon. |

A visit to the "The Red Cross" this morning, got me a commode, a Zimmer frame and a wheelchair with a leg extension. I have been on my own for most of the day with her, and i can't tell how much easier having this equipment in house has made our lives. No more LIFTING !!
I have even manged to bag an Ambulance type Taxi with a lift to take her to the Hospital and back on Friday.
I can't see her bending the Knee for anyone anytime soon But !! She has an 16th birthday party coming up and prom....I wonder |

It won't be long before the docs will want her to bend it to keep it mobile. Otherwise, After a while all the ligaments will shrink and then having to stretch them out again is very painful |

I had my knee re-built when I was 16 after shattering my knee cap and ripping all my tendons and ligaments.
It's difficult and stressful.
Best thing to do I'd go and see a specialist and get if the crutches aren't helping they should be able to provide a wheelchair with the leg support attached. |

I snapped my acl doing the same so maybe ask for a mri scan to check the ligaments , I would get her a wheelchair , maybe hire one , I ended up buying one it worked out cheaper than to hire off eBay , and painkillers , it took me a good 3 years for my leg to stop going from under me I would be walking fine and it would go from under me and then months to get better .
Unsure how far you are from me but if your local you can borrow my wheelchair xx |

I do not envy you at all. My sister has learning difficulties and coordination problems and she would be an absolute nightmare if she did something like that to her knee. Glad you have a wheelchair now as it can't have been easy without it
