I feel very sorry for them but what i cant understand is why they worry. They get there £200 cold weather payment and then £25 a week every week its freezing and below. The last two weeks when its been really cold ive used about £30 a week in gas. I cant understand why they cant keep there homes. My dad lives of his pension (yes he has plenty of savings) but never touches them he was saying hes never had so much for heating costs. |

I can see that, maybe social services should visit each one of them and explain to them that they will be ok if they put there heating on |

Dad was the same...only ever spent some of his pensions....but watched every penny....was always afraid of not having enough money to cover his costs...so heating, hot water and shopping always scrutinised each week |

Yeh, mum's cold weather allowance for the whole winter was £250. Her last month's- before the freeze- heating bill was £365- only 4 weeks. And she stays on her own. |

Maybe she needs the gas or electric people out to look at her meter, surely someone doesnt use £90 in a week may be a fault somewhere |

Damn Spelling
what I was saying was
Have to agree with you, called in at my parents yesterday just to check they were ok - they were actually more worried about me, bless em but their house was warmer than ever, the dog had even taken its coat off saying the extra money was always handy but as they are on a 'pensioners' account with the electricity supply company and they can use as much as they want when they want it has gone straight into the bank ........... I might get a bigger birthday prezzie now

"but what i cant understand is why they worry"
Our elderly are from a generation where one never asked for assistance from the state, they were brought up with the belief if you haven't got, you do without.
Successive Governments have for many years quoted the outstanding amount waiting to be claimed re elderly benefits, pity they don't / won't do a mail shot to all elderly people. |

Thats similar to what i said, maybe a little visit from social services to explain things to them |

It's more than SS would do, imagine the sudden work load from those who requested assistance. |

last few weeks i have been spendin 70 quid a wk tryin to keep house warm because of a stupid pre pay meter!
many older people dont know what they are entitled to and are scared to put heating on because of the cost as are lots of low income families then in the paper it sayin that britain only has the equivelent of 8 days worth of gas left! if anyone has elderly neighbours etc pop in and see the ok and the house and if they need anythin it may just save a life!! xx |

S'ok, I don't go back to work till Monday night. Hopefully the worst of it will have passed by then. We have a nice tent and a heater to keep us warm and I only work 2 hours per night Mon - Thur. I love my job lol. |

Sounds like there must be a fault or summat, we use about £15 - £20 for gas (central heating and hot water) and about £10 - £ 15 leccy a week when the weather is really cold. |
