Anyone watched this programme? The sheer terror and intimidation some families are suffering is absolutely appalling, we have an impeding election coming up, politicians who wish to be elected, this is your golden opportunity to tell us your intentions on tackling youth crime, forget banks, tax cuts, foreign aid etc., etc,. Start listening to the people.

Grrrrrrrrr, rant over

There's a marked difference between a potential MP telling us his or her intentions and actually doing it when they get elected. I though Brown/Blair had made that obvious lol

The trouble is that so many politicians will 'tell' us what they 'propose' to do, but when they get in - will they deliver the goods ?

Maybe in about 3 and a half years time when another election is due ..

We need action - not talk and empty promises that most of these self rigtheous windbags have to offer

Were 10 years on from him, youth crime has reached an uncontrollable level, the time has come for either political intervention or the people will reclaim the streets, the clock is ticking

The majority (although not all) the intimidation is on local authority housing estates. To get a council property then i believe a family should be well and truely vetted. Any hassle towards neighbours then one warning and if they dont heed the warning there evicted and also maybe maybe no dogs allowed in these properties as this also causes lots of intimidation from owners and there dogs (not all owners obviously)

I also believe that at school children right from when they begin school should have proper lessons in respect. If someone doesnt have respect for themselves how can they respect others. Also teaching self respect may cut down on teenage pregnancies. Involve the children from an early age in community spirit. ie have school allotments where the children can participate in the growing of produce and letting them be proud to see it grow and let them give it out to the community. Introduce more young/old schemes where the young have more interaction with the elderly I dont think this will solve all the problems but most youth crime is commited by those that although they no its wrong dont know any better, they are probley the third generation in a family to live in poverty with no employment. We need to educate them differently from a very early age. Maybe the government could increase benefits for those actively doing community work. We have to get back to having a community spirit, this has long been gone. Many dont even no there neighbours now. There are some people that are born bad but i honestly think the majority of youth crime could be sorted.

When my son was about four he asked me what i would do if i found he had stolen something and i said id take him straight down the police station and then to whoever he had stolen from. Young children make mistakes as they dont know better but if the parents and people nipped it in the bud straight away instead of letting them get away with it time and time again

Anti social behaviour requires a social response to provide a long term solution.

Any Government who suggest extra time, money or resources to provide a social response will be seen as soft.

The problem then falls at the foot of the police who are not the most suitable response as they can provide no more than a quick short term fix, but only in certain circumstances.

The Majority of the population are unaffected personally by this issue, and i imagine they want it to go away, as long as they dont have to pay for it.

Ask a social worker what could be achieved with the right amount of support.

My tuppence worth....

The problem is, we have a generation now who grew up under Thatcher's era, (where discipline was virtually abolished) yes, we can teach discipline / respect in our schools, but when the child returns home, unless that discipline / respect is endorsed it's doubtful whether children will learn.

One of Thatchers programmes was "right to buy", this one programme changed the social nature of the people of this country......

"wow no one blamed lone parents yet!!"

Lone parents don't come into it, some youths from privileged backgrounds have turned out to be thugs, some single parents have done a remarkable job bringing up children in a one parent family and are to be applauded.

Absolutely correct, one parent or two someone has to teach children respect.

Once upon a time, we had “Communities” when she demolished industry creating high unemployment, communities no longer existed as people moved round the Country in an attempt to find employment, once relocated, no one mixed, thus no more “communities”

"... the people will reclaim the streets"..???

What, civil war, gangs of heavily tooled up "vigilanties" patroling the streets doling out "civil justice"?

Unfortunately, much as we would like to see some form of positive action against the scum that inhabit some areas of our country, the chances of the above, or anything even remotely approaching it happening are unlikely. I have worked in retail security, and seen so called "upstanding citizens" turn and walk away when I was defending members of staff or getting the crap beaten out of me whilst attempting to stop shoplifters.

Although many people make the right noises about "doing something", when faced with the reality they often lack the stomach for the confrontation.

I take my hat off to those that do "stand up" to the yobs, this programme on the tv shows that it can be done, but sometimes there is a price to pay.

It only takes one positive voice to start some form of fightback, but that one voice then needs loads of support, which on many occassions is sadly lacking.

We have had trouble around our small very rural town. Young kids start off shouting insults, throwing stones, damaging vehicles, and as they got older it escalated.

One reached the age of 17 years and 11 months, and a "concerned citizen" had a word about how adults tend to solve certain problems, sometimes in a very personal way involving dark alleys and baseball bats. Then reminded him he would be an adult in a months time!!!

He got the message, which filtered down the food chain, and now there is less trouble.

Not the ideal way to solve all these problems, but often (as we found) the authorities just dont want to know.

Yes

"I have worked in retail security, and seen so called "upstanding citizens" turn and walk away when I was defending members of staff or getting the crap beaten out of me whilst attempting to stop shoplifters"

You're referring to individuals walking past not wishing to get involved, which is understandable, however, your comment:

proves my point.

No politician made these youths act the way they do. They could make the punishment fit the crime better, but the root cause is how people act in the first place.

On the ITV news at 10 all this week they have had reports on two sisters who live in the same street being harrased and abused by a family in the same street.

They interviewed the father of the abusing family ( who have asbos galore ) and the attitude whats " who cares"

If you have parents who don't care then you have no chance of the children being brought up knowing right from wrong.

And herein my dear View lies the problem! Nearly all the posts are blaming everyone apart from the parents! Someone suggested schools should be teaching respect. Is that right, and what are the parents teaching them? You have to feel sorry for some kids: you look at the parents and you can almost guarantee they stand no chance. After all, not their responsibility, they cant control them but teachers, police, Lady Ga Ga should!
