Lots of people go out at the weekend, get d*unk out of their skulls then have to be scraped off the pavement/ taken to hospital to sleep off the drink/ get patched up.

Seeing as it's self inflicted, is it time they started charging people for it?

Absolutely - we dont have resources and if we did we should not waste them on this

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I thought they did. When I was hit by a car as a child and had to go to the hospital my father got a bill for the ambulance. Luckily it was paid for by the car driver.

If that's the case though the wounded will not want an ambulance to come to their aid. This could in turn cause a more serious injury. I'm not saying what these d*unks are dingo is right, I'm just looking at the other side of the argument

Good point actually - and I dont think anybody would want that to happen. Maybe there is a way of making people at least contribute?

Agree, good point. Suppose it depends on what's up with them. Maybe a head injury they could end up worse off. But if it's alcohol poisoning I don't have much sympathy.

Didn't know they sometimes charge already.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Those that can't pay and those that won't pay will create new resource needs - in admin.

Some things already result in a bill being sent. I seem to remember an organisation I worked for being charged for a fire engine when the alarm was set off in error.

Ok. So let's also charge smokers for their diseases, people doing sports for their injuries, overweight people for their health problems, etc etc

I'd rather medical aid was available to everyone without you having to be judged 'worthy' first.

Have bareback sex, catch AIDS/HIV and be charged as it was "your fault" , where does it stop? Drink spiked madam? Rubbish, here's a huge bill. Up a ladder to fix your sky dish? Oh dangerous activity, here's your bill?

Not condoning mindless d*unken behaviour but we can all slip up sometimes and have one too many and need help.....

Yep! There's no moral difference between getting too d*unk and needing help, and breaking your leg skiing and needing help.

Except with the first, I guess people get to look down on 'chavs' and feel superior...

I believe that if the accident is caused by a vehicle then charges are not only made for the ambulance but sometimes for the treatment as well, but this is generally covered by insurance

Regardless of any merit in the proposal,

I can picture the scene right now…..,,,,

A d*unk and his mates at the Hospital A&E department being informed that owing to their intoxicated condition there will be a charge for the ambulance that brought them to hospital…

Yeah they’ll just take that on the chin like proper gentleman, perhaps even offer to pay-up right there on the spot without causing any fuss at all……. Pfffft…

As per another thread, if they have a contactless card they could just be billed discreetly through their back pocket

So someone drinks some counterfeit booze in a pub and is taken to hospital by the main essential service( ambulance, I'll come back to this later) and you have a bill for the service, the pub deny the booze is bent. Trading standards checks and all booze is ok. Joe public out of pocket.

I know quite a few people that work in all areas of the amblunance service and not one wants to see billing brought in.

1 how would you charge by the mile, time taken or a one charge fits all

2 who does the paper work

3 getting their name sometimes is a challenge let alone a address to bill too

4 alot say that be better to educate on consumption and effects

5 their are already laws that can be used via courts for being d*unk in a public space that can be used to recoup costs

6 the new system in alot of areas is cutting down on these ambulance service being the local taxi service

As a foot note did you know the amblulance service is not an emergency service but an essential service the same as gas, water and elecy board go figure that

No

Because of people had to pay lots wouldn't call one or refuse to get in it if someone else calls one and that would leave lots of d*unken girls left at the side of the road vulnerable, tho getting that pissed maybe stupid at least if they are taken to hospital they will be safe

Tax revenue from alcohol 2012,

14.6 billion,so like smokers, drinkers pay for any drink related treatment times 5.

How the government distribute this revenue is down to them.

drinkers and smokers don't only pay their share, they pay many others share also.we're the backbone of the country, yous are lucky to have us.

We don't whinge and whine,we just pay and pay.

The problem with charging for as you say d*unks is a red herring most d*unk people of all classes do not deliberately go out to fall over and hurt themselves as do the people who play sport, drive carelessly or people who part take in what someone else would say dangerous or risky activity what I mean is were do you draw the line to whom pays for the ambulance. Think of a person who happens to be d*unk and is assaulted and left on the ground is it there fault because they were d*unk .

That's all we need, give this government the slightest excuse to start privatising the ambulance service and charge certain groups of patients and see where it ends up.....

The main problem with ambulance call-outs is not the drugged/d*unk status of the patient, it's the severity of the injury. The "frivolous" calls are the worst abuse of the 999 system. I have been called out to such major disasters as a broken fingernail, a girl who'd run out of tampons, a toothache and many more. These are the ones who should be charged, not the really injured, whether d*unk or not.

Lets just rein it in a bit yeh, if you work and pay your taxes and NI then you are contributing to the NHS so why should you get charged.... why dont we levy the health tourists and foreigners who overload the systems we have paid into.. pay up or suffer is my stance for them... and if I get a ban for my _iews so be it

Not really, you can trip over an uneven pavement when sober, or after a glass of wine with dinner. If someone seriously d*unk falls in the same place was it the drink or the pavement at fault?

As has been said this is a non starter, so many legal and illegal ways you could need an ambulance, if you start on the own fault track then sports would be banned then people would get charged for not being fit enough!

Central

NHS to remain free for use, in my opinion. We're not short of cash, just short of a few tax payers, who fiddle their way out of £billions, that are needed to provide the infrastructure their businesses, as they themselves need, need to reside in this country.

Also, many injuries, such as head injuries, do not show their symptoms potentially for many hours. Often the care received in the first few minutes is critical for how the person ultimately heals or responds.

The more deterrents to good health, the more we end up with people needing expensive longer term care, aren't able to be as productive etc, which all take its toll on our society.

I'm proud of our health service, and glad it's not similar to that in other countries, where those who have the ££ are the ones who can afford it. The minute we start to disassemble it, will be a very sad day.

Not sure if this has been raised but they shouldn't have to pay anymore than smokers or fat people for extra demands on the health service.

I play rugby and barely a Saturday passes without an ambulance being called too so not sure where we would draw the line.......
