This weekend, the playoff finals take place at Wembley, today between Bradford City and Northampton Town and tomorrow between Yeovil Town and Brentford.
Now I was at Wembley for the FA Cup Final last season with Liverpool, and we all got notification that if you wanted to take a banner in above a certain size, then it had to be approved by Wembley and made of fire retardent material plus other things. In effect, it stopped the traditional banners that LFC would have expected to take to Wembley, and thus the event lost some of the humour that is often contained in banners from fans of many clubs.
However, it's come to my attention that a Yeovil fan wanted to take a banner that said "Little Old Yeovil" with him to the game tomorrow. The lovely FA and Wembley Satdium have said that to do so it will cost him £1500 because as it would be passed over supporters heads it requires an "Events Organisation Company to supervise it plus the cost of a car parking space"
It's often hard to justify many things that are football related and this is just another sad tale of Modern Football Gone Mad. Eventually they will achieve their aim and drive out the real fans leaving grounds empty or full of corprate sponsors all wondering why football stadiums don't have the same atmosphere they once had.
