The fecker had me in tears twice with the soundbites of people talking about their families war stories.
Brave brave young men.

BBC2 had a commeration service last night from Lincoln at 7pm which was about the time the crews were getting ready to fly.
It showed remarkable footage from the time itself, plus the flypast yesterday over derwentwater Reservoir in Derbyshire by The Snake Pass.
For those interested it would probably be worth watching it on Iplayer as they had a couple of the original aircrew there too plus the daughter of the bomb inventor.
They did say that 53 of the air crew died that night in the raid, but didn't say how many Germans were killed from the ensuing flood waters. |

I was lucky enough to be involved with the 50th anniversary commemoration, when a special lunch was held at the Marquis of Granby, Hotel in Bamford, close to the Derwent Dams, a very very moving occasion, which, as a historian I will never forget... |
