After an appointment today at my neurosurgeon after my problems ongoing from last November they are going to be putting artificial discs into my spine 
Nicest part they are going in through my neck and I will be scarred, I stupidly watched a video of the procedure 
Looks like I will be wearing a scarf all the time!
The risks he read out as well, paralysis etc are scary so feeling sorry for myself  |

oo you poor thing I would be scared too xxx BIG HUGS XXX I am sure thay would not do it if not best thing .. so lets think nice things xx xx keep us posted xx |

Yes that is what I was told...also told to look at pictures from prior patients of his to see the extent of the scar.
My feelings I lost to my right thumb and fingers will not return as the nerves are dead! |

Scar is small price to pay for the benefits though isnt it? Good luck to ya girl...I'll. Have drinks and a massage ready for ya when you get a full recovery. |

I googled an OP I was having once. Bad idea. Sounds nasty hun but it'll be worth it in the long run, get yourself some bio oil and some sheets that you put over the scar I can't remember what they are called. Mine are practically non existant now. X |

Scars do fade so much with time - and your well being is so much more important. Hope all goes well - sure it will  xx |

honestly im up to date on my 'mad' science
10 years ago suggesting blind people could see was almost preposterous , hand transplants also
we are progressing into a VERY lucritive bionic age... in the next 20 years... there will be a HUGE cybernetic market...its merely a fact of our progress as a species |

*I also see my neice(9) not having problems and walking as she has cerabal palsy
within 20years..i think wheelchairs and walking aids will be non existant |

Good luck. It's a relatively New procedure for the NHS (spinal fusion was the treatment of choice). Any idea which hospital the surgery will be performed at? |

Having just had heart ablation myself I know how your feeling
Mine was done through the femoral artery in my leg, all I've got is 4 small holes I'm in pain though but the ablation was needed

this is what I'm having done soon after having 2 discs removed. Had no idea they did discs instead of a rod! |

I wish yu all the good luck in the world, not a pleaant experience but a necessary one. I am sure you will be fine. My brother had similar surgery 10 years ago but they went through a 6" cut down his spine. With today's fashions scarves are all the rage & as others have said scars fade & bio oil will help.
If people can't see passed a small scar thenthey are not worth bothering about. I had a hysterectomy at 29 so know what it's like to feel scarred, but it's hardly noticeable.
You'll be in good hands. xx |

Yes my surgeon is Mr Hussien El-Maghraby and will be where I saw him today Coventry University Hospital. |

Thanks again, the risks are:
As with all surgery there are potential risks to be aware of.
1- Disc prosthesis migration was noted in 2% of patients undergoing prosthetic
cervical disc implant, although no migration was greater than 3.5 mm from initial implant site.
2- Haematoma (blood clot) at site of surgery in 0.5% which may require removal of the clot
3- Infection in 1%.
4- Temporary hoarseness due to recurrent laryngeal (voice box) nerve palsy 1%
5- moderate dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) 1%
6- Major neurological deficit as paralysis, less than 1 in 400

Don't be scared. I had a similar thing done in my lower spine . I have permamnently lost sensation in part of my lower right leg and foot due to nerve damage but that and the scarring are a very small price to pay. I really hope it goes well |

Bio oil is great. Start using it about a week after the op when the scar is starting to heal. Rub it into the scar for 15 minutes twice a day. Rub quite hard as you need to break down the scar tissue. Do that for 3 months. I did it on a scar of mine (as recommended by my surgeon) and it's just a thin white line now.

Good luck Julie, your scarring will heal and you'll feel much better for it - it's only natural to be terrified though! I barely think about the 14 inch scar down my leg from my hip replacement and I was talking to a lady who'd had her left hip done twice years ago and her scars were barely noticeable - incidentally, my surgeon said any oil will help with scarring, even olive oil! I personally use Spa Find coconut oil cos I love the smell of it (but can't stand coconut to eat strangely enough!) |
