Global warming happens its a fact of life
Its happened before and will happen again
Its the cycle of the world
Can it be stopped or slowed down
No it cant
Do we have a lot to do with it?
Maybe but doubtful
Remember the ozone layer hole??
Mass panic when it started getting bigger till they realised it did that on a cycle too
Never mentioned now lol
Yes global warming will get worse
And so will taxes xx  |

Global warming scares etc are now a new tax revenue stream for many governments.
Of course we should reduce the amount of energy we use, legislations for more efficient use etc.
But then no revenue stream in that...
Just like affordable homes (3x pay), and quality jobs (a job is a job, can't all be white collar), just what are they, lol |

I don't s'pose that anybody actually wants a realistic response, but here goes anyway...
I'm looking at this as a Geologist, as somebody who has seen the record of change and understands the science..
Yes, global warming is a natural cyclic phenomenon, governed by many differing processes within a closed and reasonably balanced environment. No we can't change or slow those natural processes.
But what we have done is to artificially accelerate the rates of change, and are set to do so even more..
Like most of my fellow geologists, I actually think that we've already left it too late to do anything and that the impact to come will be inevitable, massive and very fast in it's onset
It's time to get just a little bit scared, and personally I'm terrified of what is to hit within the next generation or so.....

it was geologists that told us 20 years ago that there was an ice age coming !
you also must know that in the middle ages there was a mini ice age , and prior to that a few thousand years ago the temperature rose by ten degrees in about 15 years , what caused that ?
the ice core evidence also shows us that during the ice age 50,000 years ago there was a lot of CO2 in the atmosphere , as you understand the science why was that ?
you say you have seen the record of change , so why do you now say that CO2 in the atmosphere might accelerate global warming when the geological record shows that in the past it has caused an ice age ?

Yes - we're still in an Ice Age - just in one of the intermediate stages.... More ice will come at some point.
Yes, CO2 has been high in the past, but what we are doing is accelerating the rate of change beyond a naturally controlable tipping point.
There will be a number of situations arising out of CO2 and other issues, many of them in complex associations. But the simplest answer is this:
Global warming melts the ice caps, which then release fresh (non-salt) water into the oceans, particularly the Atlantic. Fresh water is lighter than salt water so the expended Gulf Stream becomes diluted and can no longer sink. This will turn off the Atlantic Conveyor heat transfer system within the ocean. This then means that no more tropical / equatorial heat is brought into the north Atlantic, which then becomes cold, stagnant, losing its vital currents and then freezes, initiating a major return of an ice over the land mass.... This won't be a slow process, and could take place over a few years when it happens... Massively simplified, but that's the big fear....
But before then, our over-populated planet will probably have run out of food, power, places to live (as cities like London sink beneath the sea) economy, jobs, and any sort of social structure. Sort of Mad Max but a whole lot wetter, 'cos more warming means that warm oceans produce more rain....
Going to be a bundle of fun, so get your swinging done while you still can...!
We're all doomed - but if we're coming to the end then I wanna go with a satisfied smile on my face....

They do say that before we get hotter...we gonna have a new ice age. 
And that if the world as a whole increases its temps by just a few degrees. Many species including humans will be lost in the process.

I watched a very interesting episode of Horizon a few days ago called 'Snowball Earth' (youtube itm it's bound ot be on there).
The program established clearly that the Earth has gone through periods in it's history (600,000 years ago to be precise) whereby the entire planet was encased in ice.
Many scientists scoffed at this idea for decades until a couple of geologists proved it.
Basically what happened was this:
The icecaps encroached upon the land masses of the world and as there was less darker areas of the world (land and oceans) the whiteness of the cie reflected the sun's heat back into space. There reaches a tipping point whereby not enough heat from the sun gets through and the ice encroaches further unrestricted until it covers the tropics.
The counter-argument against this was that if the world was covered in ice once, it would still be covered in ice today. The Snowball Earth theory offered no escape clauses.
In the 1990s, an American geobiologist offered such an escape clause by establishing that volcanoes emitted enough CO2 to trap the sun's heat in the atmosphere thus heating the planet and melting the ice. CO2 is filtered out normally through rainfall but with a ice-bound planet there is no rain, so the CO2 built up unchecked over thousands of years.
Micro life underneath the ice remained alive as photosynthesis through the clear layer of ice was still possible, and when enough ice had melted and land mass became visible once more life on Earth kickstarted again.
Mankind is contributing to the environment in a negative way but it's only been 100 years since the industrial revolution and I seriously doubt we could do such serious damage in such a short space of time. We may simply be experiencing one of the planet's natural cooling down cycles and how long it takes for a heating cycle to emerge is anyone's guess.
As for me, well, I'm going to invest in the new Crochet mag that's about to be launched as a lot of people are gonna need a lot of warmer clothing.  |
