"Any mention of why?"

Well he is 71 and been the manager for 26 years!

I think because they just won, he wants to leave on the back of a successful season.

Also he is still going to be involved with the club.

I dont think he was the best but one of the top ones. I think Bill Shankley was the best, he picked up three european cups.

Also you got brian clough and bob paisly.

I used to love football but got so deluded when they started letting foreign players in the team and the extorcinat fees for a player

In an industry where you can be fired for losing 1 game I think his tenure with 1 club is something to be revered and applauded..even if it is football

End of an era! Simply the best manager ever.

My bet is David Moyes to replace him, you heard it here first folks

Blimey I'm shocked!! know there's been a lot of speculation but thought it would be another season away at least.

He will be sadly missed ,. I think he'll still have a lot to do with the FA

Well it's the end of an era, thats for sure. Whoever takes over, it's going to be very interesting to see if they can keep the Manc's winning or if they'll slip backwards.

Mourinho is probably the man most adept at taking over, but he could cause carnage too by changing many things at MU, David Moyes, as good as he has been at EFC, he's untested in buying the really big name big money players and managing them and thier ego's.

Whoever get's it, it'll be interesting times ahead.

Isn't he pretty much a shoe-in for Chelski though?

I agree though if the Manu job is offered he would fuck over Chelsea without a thought.

LOL as much as I love Shanks, it was actually Bob Paisley that won 3 European Cups, the only British manager to have achieved that record.

As a dyed in the wool LFC fan, I'd simply say that Fergie has earnt my grudging respect over the years.

Mind you, in his early years when The Stretford End were baying for his neck, while the LFC fans in the away end were sarcastically chanting he should stay (me included), time has proven that both sets of supporters got it wrong.

If only that damnd Marc Robins hadn't scored that goal in the cup and if only Martin Edwards hadn't stuck with him when many wanted his head....

Good ...hope this is the start of the demise of Man U...they are the main reason football has become money game...hope they go the way of Leeds, Portsmouth and Wolves.

With you on the first point Funky!

But please god not Moyes!!

And likewise Mourinho!

As for any successor - serious pressure and expectancy beckons. Vital be a brave soul who steps in - but I'd be amazed if the club didn't have a contract signed before announcing his departure!

It needs someone that can keep a power hold over the players like a head master.

Thats how Man Utd have operated well for so long.

Someone that is willing to stick around and has the credentials for the top top position in world football.

Moyes? He's the right type of diligent straight lined manager - but does he have the credentials - what has he won exactly?

Jose is a clown who is better off back at chelsea - his antics would not suit the United way.

Benitez anyone? LOL

Man Utd have to get the appointment right and the players have to back the manager - Moyes seems the best guy atm, since Pep has gone to Munich.
