Its what some like personally we don't but using it doesn't make anybody anything as people who use eloquent grammar aren't professionals either no matter how much they think they are

There has to be a direct correlation between the emergence of text speak and the general downturn in basic spelling

"There has to be a direct correlation between the emergence of text speak and the general downturn in basic spelling"

Yes and no. It's origin is in the fact that typing words on an old-style alphanumeric mobile keypad takes ages and so abbreviations or shorthand were devised. However, using it when you have access to a qwerty keyboard seems a bit lazy.

The thing is, I don't look down on people who use it, but I won't bother reading it... - Trying to decipher it gives me a headache (and I'm 24!).

A friend of ours thought the same, but he sent a text to his sister in law whose partner had recently died, saying, 'Sorry to hear of your loss, lol.' oops

No I dont agree with that....every phone now has a built in keypad that allows words to be written as normal....if you were on a qwerty keyboard would you use text speak....I dont think so.....the delicate nuances of the E nglish language escpecially in an intimate and erotic context cannot be conveyed via text speak shit.....end of rant..

I find it maddening in two regards:

that people actually communicate with it (given you can write a small essay in the free space available in a text message) and, that people over the age of 40 years, readily use it!

It reminds me of shiny purple tracksuits for some reason

There is no need for it what-so-ever! Five to ten years ago when we didn't have qwerty keyboards on our phones and texts were charged individually at 10p per text, it may have been excused (only in text messages though)

However these days we all have unlimited texts and we all have qwerty keyboards on our phones, so as such, "txt spk" should be consigned to the history books (not that it warrants any place there!)

I think its quicker and is an effective way to communicate when sending messages. People only dislike it because they don't understand it. Have you guys seriously never used 'lol' 'brb' '2day'in a message?

How can you say it's an effective way of communicating when people have already stated they don't understand it? If you then have to type it in full, it has become inefficient and ineffective. If you take it a step further and say people should learn it, that too is ineffective, as, by extension, we should all learn every single language - again ineffective and inefficient.

I understand the majority of text abbreviations and used them quite frequently in my teenage years in text messages. There's absolutely no reason to use them in messages, or on forums, or any other place where there is plenty of space to type words in full.

I used to mark GCSE science papers and there was an abundance of kids, clever kids at that, who still scored A's and A*s that used text speak. No wonder our 18-24 year olds are unemployable, if they can't write in English without using text speak. This is why it needs to be wiped out.

Well not everyone understands French buy it is still an effective way to communicate. For text speakers, its quicker and easier to use text language

My brother recently advertised a vacancy for an IT specialist for his company.

One applicant, with lots of exact expertise and in his early 40's, submitted his CV. In his covering letter, the text was predominantly text speak.

My brother decided, on the level of technical experience shown, to get him in anyway for inter_iew, part of which included an exercise in which a report had to be compiled detailing how to fix a software fault, specific to the role being advertised.

The applicant still littered his report with text speak; he seemingly couldn't communicate in any other format.

Needless to say, he didn't get the job and when given feedback as to why, was surprised that he'd been turned down for failing to use everyday English!

I can't abide text speak and ok, may use lol in a text but more likely to be ha ha!

If we chat to anyone either by email or skype and they use it, it just turns me off totally.....there is no need to do it either in a text or email.

Bad grammar or spelling don't bother me - because they've made the effort to write properly.

The people who use it may be intelligent and very fuckable but they don't do themselves any favours by being lazy on a keyboard

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

Text speak is a total turn off for me. When used in an actual text message it is forgiveable if it can be understood but it belongs nowhere else with the exception of the odd LOL which seems to have crossed over into other formats like chat and forums. The clue is in the name. It is TEXT speak.
