I need to buy a new(ish) vacuum.
The same money will buy a refurbed Dyson or a new Vax. I don't know which models yet.
Anyone have experience of both and can offer an opinion?
I mostly have carpets throughout, no kids or pets.
Thanks in anticipation. |

My mum has vax to wash carpets and dyson as hoover .. I wanted a dyson but hubby insisted they crap and we got a Henry ( crap in my opinion lol) anyway I went out and bought the tesco cylinder bagless and that has a great suck on it lol.
We gave 4 kids and a dog lol but we have real wood floor all down stairs and carpet on stairs and in bedrooms. I think its pretty good .. but back to original question who knows I think it's personal preference. Oh by the way it was only £40 for my tesco bargain lol .good luck with the search x |

Henry's almost bullet proof, but I did mange to kill one, never killed a dyson but I used to be a dyson engineer so always bring em back from the dead |

dysons are complete toilet pants and made of scrap gnomes. Shite. Vax are good, nowt rong with them. If you have the spendies, get a kirby. Lots of bolt ons and sucks like a £500 p/h escort. |

Hate Dysons. Good at sucking but not very easy when you want to whip the hose out to suck round edges etc.
Would go for a vax or a bissel.
Oh lord, you wouldnt believe how exited i am at replying to a hoover thread..and im not been sarcastic lol.
Think i need to get out more.

Recently bought a Vax when the old Hoover gave up after years of cleaning up DIY mess, cost about £80 and so far I'm bloody impressed as it hoovers the cats discarded fur very well. Don't think paying £300 for a Dyson would improve much |

I still haven't bought a new vacuum but I'm indebted to the pal who texted me ............
Hi mate I don't want you to panic but I'm texting you from the casualty department. Turns out the new Dyson Ball cleaner isn't what I thought it was.

I make a mess for a living and the only bombproof vacuum is the numark Henry ..... completely indefatigable and will suck your shag like no other... parts are stupidly cheap (that's assuming that it ever breaks). I've had mine for 18 years now and for a great part of that it has been used as the dust extractor in my workshop. |

Reading this with interest, in fact wish we could get another which trial month to find out what the experts say
Dysons are silly money but then again she doesn't want something she can't throw around. |

Like previous poster, had a Dyson, but it bit the dust Got a Vax and never looked back (doesn't that sound vaguely familiar ??) Far more portable. Same technology as a Dyson, but significantly cheaper |

"I would love a steamer thingymyjiggy, but I cant as the flooring I have is not compatible
dam, they look like they get your floor really clean"
If you do decide to buy one, be careful which brand you buy. I bought an X5 (green, triangular head) and it was appalling. I had issues before it arrived with billing. After it arrived, it fell apart with in minutes....literally. I couldn't get through to the sales team and in the end, got my money back through Barclaycard. Worst buy ever!

Putting in a verification that she 'sucks like a Henry' may indicate some sexual confusion |

I have a cylinder Dyson and an upright Vax. I have had upright Dysons and they were fine, just replaced them as they got old. I got the Vax so I had an upright, as I found the cylinder Dyson didn't clean the carpets that well. (I got it when I lived somewhere with laminate flooring). The Vax filter is fiddly to clean compared to the Dyson. I think you wouldn't go wrong with either. |

"If my Dyson turns out to be as indestructible as the packaging, I'll be pleased.
It's taken me an hour to get the damned thing out of the box."
Why did you not want to go for a Henry? He smiles at you and everything.
I've had a Dyson and a Vax, the Dyson was ok but the Vax was shit, the filters always needed cleaning and then drying overnight.
I'd have saved a stack of money if I'd have stuck with Henry. |

No contest, has to be the Dyson.
A friend had a vax, as a vaccuum cleaner it wasn't bad and pretty much did the job, but it lasted about 6 months before it needed repairing.
My dyson on the other hand is five years old and still going strong, nothing seams to phase it. (As its a cylinder job, I don't have any issues with getting into all thos nooks an crannies, including cleaning the car.)
Ah that reminds me I must give the filter a quick wash. |

Neither of them...go for a Henry, best suction and always has stamina! I've been round the block a few times with these vacuums, had a few vax and a dyson one in the past but personally, I found nothing more reliable than Henry...henry is a whore of a hoover! |

"I would not buy a dyson if there were the last Hoover going, after he shut his factory in Wales and made forty people redundant ,so he could make more money. "
That was 2002.
Since then he's recruited far more than he ever let go. Businesses change dependant on the prevailing economy.
Or would it have been better just to go out of business completely?

It never would have
He moved to a cheaper workforce
And he's still overcharging for his bloody machines
The uk people made him rich buying his products
He was immoral to close the unit in Wales
I hope he does go bankrupt now |

The reason to move abroad was cost yes. Cheaper production costs led to increased profit, increased investment and more employment in the UK.
I could list hundreds of companies that have done the same.
Dysons are sold worldwide so saying UK consumers have made him rich is crap.
People will pay what they are happy to pay.
The company employs more in the UK than it ever has and took on 300 new staff in Wiltshire less than 2 years ago.
So closing the Welsh site and 40 redundancies wasn't great for those involved - but was for the company and the rest of the workforce - past, present and future.
And he'll never go bankrupt.

I don't care
And he did initially sell almost exclusively to the UK market
They made him famous and rich
I'd use a broom before using a Dyson
And I've emailed him and told him I think he's immoral
The people of Wales are poorer than those in Wiltshire and needed the jobs far more for their local economy |

Just to mix it up, we replaced our Dyson (broken) with a vax that was useless and then bought a bosch silent. Really quiet and sucks the carpet off the underlay if you have it on full blast!
James Dyson is one of the few billionaires who pay the full UK tax on his pay. He doesn't need to, but he does. |

Very true
Worcester are home to bosch
Not sure about all of what they make here
But I know they make gas boilers

15 year old Dyson still going strong. Before that had a Henry, but was left behind in the divorce and new partner (at that time) wanted Dyson, so I indulged her and kept it when she left.
Would go back to a Henry though, they're fantastic value and work really well, and are the contract cleaner tool of choice. |

"Took you a year to buy a hoover?, Jesus your carpet must be filthy.
Not exactly filthy.
The old Hoover hadn't quite died and the cleaning service took up the slack."
I've reconsidered that reply. I 'thought' it was pretty clean but the dust bucket on the Dyson says otherwise - and I've still got bedroom 2 and the kitchen to do.
