They are not going to allow 18-rated movies like Saw, Hostel and Reservoir Dogs at jails in England and Wales under changes. What the fuck were they letting them watch them in the first place is what I want to know!

"feom someone whos been inside however its limited and monitored"

You can't even get internet access in an open prison.

They should be allowed no privileges.

I made my inmates listen to Radio 2 when I worked in the prison - not sure if it helped with recidivist rates though!!!

Personally I agree with making prisons tougher after having worked in a Cat B prison which was like a holiday camp!! Choice of menu options given each week, tv, pool table, free gym access and free access to education!!

Now I'm all for encouraging them not to reoffend by educating them but a bit galling when someone doing time for murder can get a free degree when I'm now stuck with a 25k student loan which I'll never pay off because I wanted an education!!!

Surely no one really believes by stopping a violent film is going to make one iota of difference.

As another person stated there is no internet access based on my experience.

You are allowed tv in room however the cost comes out of the work allowance you get. Too many believe the crap in the sun etc.

All i go on is my experience of doing work in the prison.

You're 41, you've got 14 years to pay off your Student Loan and that's if you're earning over £21K...you'll probably end up paying as much for your education as prisoners do i.e. Nothing, or not very much anyway !

Over 15k is the start point when I graduated a couple of years back and considering the student loan company stop over £100 out of my wage each month and will do for the next 21 years as I'm not sure where you got 14 years from I think I'll pay a damn site more than any prisoner ever will thank you!!!

The land of grey peas and bacon

Its depends what prison they are sent to as to what they get... While I am completely aware that if you are prepeared to commit a crime then you must understand that there will be consequences should you get caught..Its a very depressing place is prison and there are many that should not be in prison but in a place that can support their needs i.e mental health etc..

Prisoners do get conjugal visits.

Though it does depend on which prison they are in.

That's so true there's many in there that need help or acceptance rather than locking up!! I had a guy with Tourette's who constantly reoffended as he felt in prison he wasn't judged by his condition. Sad really as he was a lovely guy but every time he was released he was back within a week

Few points here.

What if you are on remand. You are not guilty awaiting trial. As you are not convicted of anything why shouldn't you get privileges!?

As for education that's a joke. Education is enforced. You work or go to classes. Usually shit which will never give you an accreditation.

Tv in cell and kettle. Some prisons will stream DVDs also. Hardly the Ritz and their liberty has been taking away.

Too many people have a throw away the key attitude rather than asking why folks are offending in the first place

You raise a fair point regarding those on remand.

Those are not the majority though.

Why shouldnt education or work be compulsary.

Not like you got anything important to do otherwise.

I just added as some seem to feel hard done by that prisoners are educated. Its usually art classes or cooking or basic life skills. Very rare someone will actually achieve a degree inside. If they do they usually lifers or long term cons. There is a choice, work or go to class. In return you get paid around £3 a week to phone loved ones.

The majority of people inside are on remand therefore not convicted.
