Those that know me through the forum will probably know I live in Spain. But with my parents failing health, I sometimes wonder if I would ever go back to the UK to live.
I'm a bit out of touch with prices in the UK these days, but if I was going to live mortgage free, what's a ball park figure for monthly bills?
I'd be living way away from London and the SE, so no silly finances involved!!!!
Hit me with your anecdotes, sage advice or the usual sarcastic comments.

How long's a piece of string? Depends on the property, how much your home, how hot you want the heating, whether you are happy eating Tesco Value or want Waitrose and a multitude of other things.
Our 3 bed bungalow in the frozen north (which runs an EV) has combined energy bills on DD of £215 pm. Water of £60pm. Council tax of £180-something, I think. We can do a week's shopping for the household for about £100 and buy decent stuff.
Dunno what other bills we'd have which might be applicable. We don't have subscriptions like Netflix or suchlike really. |

"We're do your parents live. Hypothetically how close do you want to live to them.
Purely for market research purposes. So we can be accurate in our sarcastic replies. Lol"
Hah! They live in south Wales. I'd stay with them sometimes, but might actually live in a motor home. More like "The Good life" on wheels rather than "swampy" and the New Age travellers.

Ta, some useful food for thought there. I like good food, but I'm happy to cook for myself.
What's an EV?
As per above, I might actually roam around in a motorhome for a few years. I don't even know if there's a way they change you council tax in those circumstances. I suppose gov.uk would supply an answer?

Seems to me that quite a few parts of the UK are slowly going down the toilet, especially the bigger cities. In South West Wales you can get a half-decent little 3 bedroom renovation job for around £110 - £130k…all depends how much money you then want to spend to make a ‘nice’ house. I’d quit the UK tomorrow if my finances allowed it but I am looking a little further ahead and perhaps leaving in around 4-6yrs or so.
My advice is to stay put and selfishly think of No1, you can always get a cheap flight back as often as possible and do what you can for your parents while they’re still here. Good luck all the same OP 👍🏼👍🏼 |

"I would stay in Spain and visit weekly, if affordable. Britain is not in a great place at the moment."
The wasted time sitting in airports would eventually do me in. I love Spain, but I also love my folks!

An electric vehicle. It means our electricity bill can seem high but it's really not when you think it covers our household leccy plus almost all our use of the car. Diesel bills were much higher.
If you're going to do motorhoming then ignore everything I said because it's probably utterly meaningless! |

"Biggest bill for me is heating.
At one point I was paying almost 800 quid a month.
Now I've got it down to about 300.
(Still a lot for one person.)"
For heating? for 800 a month I expected a garden |

Blimey, I'd be buying jumpers and a hot water bottle!!!
That sounds ludicrously expensive.

Bugger me!!
My gas/electric is under £60/mth. But then I've had the heating on about 6 times in the last 15 mths (I own a lot of oodies 🤷♂️) and I live alone.
The figures some quote for theirs is probably around the same as my rent. 😮😮 |
