One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich, by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. My favourite book, lost track of how many times I've read it. Exactly what it says in the title, really easy to read, deeply moving.
My best read of 2024 was probably The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, by Tom Hanks. A wonderful, fabulous book.
I've just finished Life Inside, by Linda Calvey and started I Will Ruin You, by Linwood Barclay. |

Seemed an appropriate time to re-read Lord

Henrietta Lacks is excellent but I have grimly mixed feelings about D H Lawrence.
Currently finishing a Inspector Morse novel, and it's fun to find out what a filthy old man he was compared to Colin Thaw's melancholy loneliness. Next up is going to be either a highbrow book on evolution or a Lee Childs Reacher. Perhaps both would provide a bit of cosmic balance. |

I find him a pompous, pseudo mystical git who is so full of his own seriousness that he makes life almost laughably ridiculous with his pretensions. At the same time, he writes so gorgeously that his imagination is often irresistible. As I said, definite mixed feelings!
I have the same for Thomas Hardy (who I prefer to Lawrence). Hardy is so determinedly miserable that it's infuriating - always arranging for something horrible to happen to his characters. Again, though, a beautiful writer.
My current favourite classic author is Anthony Trollope, who never fails to make me happy. Life seems more interesting and more generous when I'm reading Trollope. |

Ah, I see. I've read Hardy reluctantly because he's so bloody miserable that I cannot bear it. But I've not read anything by Lawrence (yet) or Anthony Trollope! |

Yes but the only restriction (that I've put on myself!) is that I wanted to read a book pre-1950 but without buying any new books.
I do have several options if the DH Lawrence doesn't work out but I'm going to give it a good go before I switch to something else. |

Yes, I can't fit reading into my schedule, so use Spotify/Libby when I'm walking, driving, at the gym etc |

Sometimes I just like to lie in bed and listen to someone else read to me. Libby is amazing for library books, especially if you've found some libraries to join that don't need you to go in and verify yourself. |

Yes, I agree about D.H.Lawrence; we had to read some at school and it put me off him. Hardy I haven’t read for ages, but I liked. Trollope I hadn’t read for ages but did again recently and very much enjoyed.
I mainly read history but for light relief do read novels and shows stories too. I recently read some Somerset Maugham which I really enjoyed, and P.G. Wodehouse and Evelyn Waugh are old favourites. At the moment I’m reading Jan Morris’s ‘Oxford’ which I find very good. |

Recently read 'broken music' an autobiography by sting.
He makes about 10 grand a day from the police track "every breath you take" alone.. & has done since the 80s.
It's the most played track ever on the radio and has translated to modern platforms also, billions of play spotify.
(It's up there with 'happy birthday'..)
Mind boggling.
