Lay off the tea and coffee at night, deep breathing, and try and think of empty black spaces. Horrible to have, I end up getting up and playing online poker for an hour or so,then try again( not always successful though) |

If you can at all bear it, try exercise in the late afternoon to early evening. It might help wear you out.
Some people break it with a "stay awake until my body crashes out", but it doesn't work for me. |

I'm going to get some rescue remedy and nytol today to try tonight.
GP is calling back this afternoon to see if my problem is urgent enough...
I have some exercise planned this evening, but I kinda know its tinnitus that's keeping me awake 🧟♂️🧟♂️🧟♂️🧟♀️ |

I feel for you OP, being that exhausted is awful. Nothing works for me anymore other than some pretty strong sleeping tablets. Good luck with your Drs appointment, hopefully they can prescribe something to help. |

When I struggled to sleep the doctor prescribed me phenergan which is an old style of anti-histamine that creates drowsiness. It did help to a degree but you can't use it every night or you build a tolerance. You can buy it over the counter without a prescription. |

Make some changes to your bedtime routine., for example
Stop using your phone an hour before going to bed, and don't have it in the bedroom.
Don't have a telly in the bedroom.
Don't think medication is the fix as it's not.

"What do people do when they're struggling to sleep?
It's been 5 nights now and I'm desperate 😫 "
I'm an Insomniac, but if your looking for medicication good luck.
5 nights is kind of OK. I ended up at a clinic on harly Street. An prescribed. Diasipan and stillnoct. To make me sleep as it hag got so bad. But once I was back with my GP they have slowly reduced medication as its additive and if you keep tacking it it stops working..
Did not sleep again last night. |

You mean stay awake until your body forces you to sleep? What if that doesn't happen and you just never sleep 😱😭😭 |

I sleep about one night a week on medication. If I did not have the medication I have been known to go weeks, months with very little sleep. I can lay in bed and this is enough to recharge me. |

Relax an hour before you want to go to bed, put your phone away, dim any lights and take a couple of magnesium. If you still can't sleep get up, don't make your bed your awake place and then try again once you're feeling sleepy. |

I get out of bed, if I'm not getting close enough to sleep. I might do something tedious or difficult or just take a peaceful break. But anxiety, etc isn't good for initiating sleep, so I develop tranquility. I might also have a hot drink - without any caffeine. Very occasionally I'll do something that's tedious |

Sounds a bit weird, but try to stay awake.
Yeah I know, I've suffered from insomnia for 45 years since childhood trauma and a very over active brain that doesn't shut off.
When I want to sleep I try my hardest to stay awake, usually drift off around 3am up for work 5:30 |

The NHS has some guidance and tips -from memory :
Ensure you've been to the toilet before going to bed
Have a glass of water to hand
Make sure the temperature is right and that you have good curtains / blinds to block out the light. Use ear plugs if it's noisy.
Reduce distractions - no tv / phone etc. Don't eat before going to bed.
Practice meditation and breathing.
Read a book / play meditation music.
Consider a warm bath before going to bed.
Practice clearing your mind -don't ruminate over your day.
The extreme advice, which assumes you you have a flexible schedule, is to be sleep until you feel sleepy. Whilst napping is good for you, it can prevent you from sleeping at night. Try to exercise in the daytime
