Social and conversational skills. Effort. Good profile. Respect. Ability to focus on social not just sex. Getting to events. Maintaining own standards, boundaries and self respect. Making the most of their attributes.
A mix of the above, and probably other factors I’ve forgotten, in my experience.

I am going to the Leeds social on the 1st and I am looking to start going to clubs. Just gotta find the time for clubs

My question is why do you want to be popular.
Popular does not mean anything. A lot of veris are from club meets or socials.
I have never wanted to be popular. I want to be me and if that’s not good enough then so be it |

You don’t need to be Hemingway. A half decent first message explains why you’re interested in that profile, why you think you’d be compatible, what you have in common and what you offer/are looking for.
The rest should be a two way conversation.

I think it’s obvious though why some people want to be, it might be misguided but most people prefer to be liked than disliked by others. What’s important to me is who I want to be liked by |

I don’t think there’s ever a way to understand the cryptic way of getting your opening message noticed….sometimes it a case of pot luck in my opinion.
I have a rather engaging profile and show my face, read a profile and make attempts to include something from there in a message….but with the fact I’m 1 of 1000’s of men on here….i can get lost in amongst the traffic….and im probably not what the person is looking for…..its respected and accepted.
Just be yourself and do your thing….youll get noticed OP….and until you do….hold your head high and say “it’s their loss”  |
