Today, in Holland, Queen Beatrix has signed a piece of paper abdicating her right to be Queen and thus passing the Monachy onto her son Pince (now King) Willem-Alexander. Queen B was 75 and follows in the steps of her Mother and Grandmother both of whom abdicated during their later years of life.
While it's hard to imagine our Queen taking the same steps, especially as she currently remains in what seems pretty good health and active in her role, I wonder how people feel about the principal of the reigning monach effectively resigning or retiring and allowing the younger generation to come through.
From a personal perspective, I'm not a either for or against The British Royal Family, they are simply a part of our history and traditions and like Buckingham Palace or Big Ben, we'd probably be worse off without them than we are with them. If our Queen suddenly announced she was retiring in September while it would be a huge surprise and ofcourse massive news, I have to say it really wouldn't bother me at all.
Anyway Long Live King Willem-Alexander until your time to abdicate arrives... |
