New speed limits

What do people think of the new speed limits coming into force ,my view is there ridiculous Wales brought them in then ditched them so ireland decided to have ,why not just ban everything that does more than 60 kph oh and I hope they keep an eye on electric bikes and e scooters for speeding as well |

If only that was true. They continue to be a nightmare. Sometimes right in the centre of town too. Any they repair is a joke and nobody checks anyway. Total incopetence and disregard for the users. I best leave it there before the blood pressure rises  |

You might find them annoying, but if they save the life of one child. It's worth it IMO. I am a driver, I find them annoying too, especially in London. But would I want to bet a kid's life on it, no. |

No such thing as road tax it's vehicle excise duty based on emissions and is no longer collected for the upkeep public roads. Road repairs comes from general taxation and is paid to local councils from central government. |

Lots of people still regard it as road tax. I know that the monies collected are not used for road repairs directly. My point was the government are going to receive more money, but unlikely we will see more road repairs. |

Except the facts don't support your hypothesis. In Wales there have been 25% fewer accidents since the default speed limit was reduced to 20mph

I'm supportive of the speed reductions in Wales, but I think they pitched it at the wrong level
20 is almost impossible to drive at and so slow that many choose to ignore
25 would have been a better compromise and the equivalent roughly 40kph works well in countries like Australia.
You could supplement that with mandatory lower levels around schools. You could go as low as 15mph there.

A 24% decrease in accidents over the whole year and approximately 100 fewer people have died or sustained life altering injuries.
Surely the results speak for themselves.

Road deaths are significantly lower in Wales since 20mph was adopted. Many residential roads in England would benefit from this limit too, they are narrow and driving at 30mph is dangerous to residents and schoolchildren. I'm happy to drive slower if it saves lives. |

There was a surge when first introduced, I can’t find anything that shows this trend was ongoing. Still, I’d rather see the cost of replacing a piece of metal than a life taken |

How will that work then? The vehicle is taxed not the owner. It makes no difference how old the owner is as rfl is going up for all vehicles.
Just a click bait headline to give boomers something else to be worried about.

The most important thing is that anyone signicant in society must dríve a high performance agressively styled German car. Never mind if it is useful or not.
Younger family members will be able to work fiddles taxing cars for the over 70s.

Has anyone else adapted their driving style to accommodate all of the faster, high powered cars on the road today?
Knowing even basic cars could be chipped to their limit and change their speed unexpectedly.

If you are asking - do I panic and try to get out of the way if some idiot comes racing up behind me and tries to force me out of the way? No. I don’t.
I will drive as I always do and will pull over when it is safe to do so. And they can wait behind me until that moment. |

The great thing about the fab forums compared to other social media is the lack of algorithms. If you get something wrong it gets corrected. You’re not shut in a bubble with people who agree. I was wrong about assuming more accidents and now I know better. I’m grateful for that.

I mean if you’re trying to predict the movement of all the cars around you. It used to be easier knowing which cars would be slow or might change speed quickly. Most were slow and there were few high performance cars. Now any car could be chipped and lots of cars are high performing. And they’re still on the hands of drivers with the same old capacity. |

20 mph is too fast in town. We need more traffic calming, more pot holes, more traffic lights, thinner roads, in fact ban cars from the city centre and laugh at all the shops closing.
Put the rates up just in case .
Cut back on public transport, increase the parking meters to an incredible amount per 10 mins, double yellows everywhere, let the cyclists rule!
Office workers in the city - devil worshipping that’s what there doing - ban the offices!
Close the pubs too, and the nightclubs no longer needed.
With the free hotels. Put the immigration freeloaders in there, pay them to occupy the rooms.
The slogan……. Glasgow’s miles better……. It’s not.

With cars safer than ever they are not the problem.
Driving round town constantly looking at your speedos to make sure you won't get caught is crazy. Not knowing if you are in a 20 or 30 zone just causes frustration. And the slower you are the less focused you are, so more prone to daydreaming, or being tempted to get on your phone!
The key is better pedestrian awareness. Bring back the green cross code etc. If pedestrians are not in the road they won't be in accidents.
And license scooters and electric bikes making helmets, lights and insurance mandatory. It can't be that hard ffs.
And with insurance tax generates a few more quid to fix the roads making them safer.
Life can be simple, if we let it. |

And these facts are from???
They will not include all damage only accidents, if you are going slower there will be less damage, with the cost of insurance most folk will just get slight damage repaired without notifying insurance so to not increase premium.
Meaning not all accidents are then recorded.
Speed is not a main factor of accidents in it’s self.
How about we teach people to actually learn to drive and not just to pass a test. |
