I recently had a refresher course in speed (ahem) and was appalled by the lack of knowledge of some of the folk in there.
I came away convinced that we all should have a refresher every 5 years. Maybe with a potential recommendation for a resit.
Losing your license for a silly mistake would be a nightmare, but there’s a lot of terrible drivers out there.
I knew exactly what the speed limit was, btw. I just decided that I needed to go faster than it. |

I passed my test in the Ice Age and I think it's nuts I haven't had to do one since - cars, driving conditions and the law have all changed so much. I did have some advanced tuition through work which was a big help. |

I think people who have shown they have a need for the refresher course should probably be made to do them more frequently in the future.
I do think that an age related one should be applied when you get to 70 and then probably every 5 years after that - irrespective of how you faired in the meantime. |

It’s another tricky one. For a lot of old people losing their ability to drive leaves them housebound. But it might be necessary for the safety of everyone.
My Dad retired from driving after his GP notified the DVLA of a medical condition. They invited him to resit his test in a busy city centre (he lives in the sticks) in a car they supplied (not his own) and during Friday afternoon rush hour.
He surrendered his license rather than face that. |

Mmm not sure I agree with a resit. I myself passed many moons ago. But I'm confident in my driving. I'm not a fast driver. I have never and will never need to be in such I rush I drive erratically.
For me the tuition of new drivers is shall we say dumbed down maybe? That's only my personal opinion. If you drive for a living there is a a certain amount of driver training you have to complete to keep your licence.
I can be short tempered at irresponsible/dangerous driving. we have the a361 link road here which is terrible.
I have patience for new drivers and well, not very good drivers. I think we just need to be honest with our abilities behind the wheel, the streets can be confusing and littered with signs and sometimes bombard the senses, I think we need to slow down and give the ole grey matter time to assess what's going on around us. But agree that some of the driving is quite mad sometimes.

Totally agree OP
I went in a speed awareness course it was very enlightening !
I also ride a bike had my licence a long time and many bikes ! In my riding life and have been out on a couple bike awareness courses they have been brilliant and it’s not just for older riders but great for awareness strategies
Perhaps a car awareness courses should be undertaken every ten years ! FOC !

When I first learned to drive I was the only one in my circle of friends who hadn't been driving since I was 14 or 15 either on farm machinery or a parents car around private land.
I was also the only one who passed my test first time while they all had to do it at least twice.
That taught me how easily we can pick up bad habits.
In a previous job I was responsible for 18 drivers and arranged CPC courses for them which I also attended even though I don't have a HGV licence.
I was amazed at how little knowledge many of the drivers carried over from year to year.
As one of them said to me once, when they climbed behind the wheel of a 26 ton lorry it wasn't just the vehicle they put into automatic and so much was done by instinct and muscle memory.
I've no idea if I would pass a test now or not. I got my licence in 1983 so I'm sure the test is completely different these days. |

The number of people who have terrible lane discipline, no idea where they should be on roundabouts, are hesitant, can't keep up with traffic etc etc is shocking. I think a resit at 70 is a good thing even though I'd hate to have to do it. It would out the vast number of people driving with impaired sight for a start. After 80 I think it should be yearly or even 6 monthly. New drivers ought to be required to take a scaled down test after a year too.

I think people should do refresher courses every 10yrs, then over 65 maybe every 3 years.
Not a full test, enough know to understand speed limits, correct positioning at roundabouts/junctions.
But also get that some people only ever drive around locally rather than bigger town/cities.
It would be hard to apply but I think it would reduce some accidents
