Well… it’s that time of the year again when the knowledgeable rugby folk of the forum all get together…..

So… with the incentive of the lions tour to Australia this summer looming a couple of questions as starting points

1) France and Ireland… who wins the championship?

2) England and Scotland… are they “back”

3) Italy… was last year a fluke.. or will they against one of the top 4

4) Wales… will they get a win?

Bonus question…. With the summer in mind who would be your lions captain?

Remember this year we also have the introduction of the “20 minute red card “ so for some offences you will see a red given, and then the bunker will decide if it’s permanent.. or a 20 minute sin bin , however that player can not come back on the field after the completion and will be replaced by a substitute

I expect it will get confusing.. the ref is going to have make an announcement as to which it is so people know

————————————————-

Anyway normal rules for the rugby thread apply … witty comments, vents of sarcasm and anger always welcome!!!!

I’ll start…..

Whoever decides to give the European rugby cup TV rights to premier May they suffer a 4 week “poke in the eye “ offence in the scrum… I thought the 12 week gouging was a bit harsh!

I’ll be back later in the week to as per normal vent my anger at the french back 5.. and the man who shall still not be named!!!

Also… I propose having a “chunky” of the tournament! Yes! Enough of those pretty boys… fat men will rise! Fat men doubling as backs gets double points!!

This year is a real head scratcher, Fabio. I can't work it out at all.

There is always the strong possibility though that Dupont's return means that France walk it.

But you know. France.

England are back… but not in championship winning form yet I don’t believe.

My lions skipper would always be a backrow forward and currently I’m in awe of Tom Willis.

Whether he even makes the tour squad is another question but in my eyes he fits the bill for a lions skipper.

I’m excited to see how this England squad performs although I’m a little disappointed with the back row selection.

Willis to come off the bench against Ireland and change the game

I don't think there will be a Grandslam. Not just a 2 horse race. Be wary of the Jocks too.

As long as Wales get the wooden spoon and go without a single win that's all that matters.

I do actually love the Welsh. Just not at rugby. At all.

High Lighthouse!

Even though I'm an England supporter, I'm a bigger fan of rugby. For that reason I'd live to see Italy finish the set and beat England.

But beyond that, it's a tough one to call. I'd lean towards France, but just about any team could do it.

It's not a grand slam year, so who beats who and when is going to be important.

I was going to post an even-handed, thoughtful assessment of each teams’ prospects.

However, having read that, I’ve reverted to the me of 30 years ago - one who would cope with four crushing defeats, as long as we sneak a win over the Ruperts in the last game. Preferably via a last minute try featuring a forward pass Patrick Mahomes would struggle to pull off .

Being serious though - I go with France, but expect England to finally live up to their potential and be the best of the home nations.

Wales is a basket case, largely due to chronic underfunding of the professional game and lack of focus beyond the national team.

We actually do have some young talent coming through - amazing in the circumstances. It’s miracle we’ve been competative as long as we have. A long road back.

1) France

2) England

3) Ireland

4) Scotland

5) Italy

6) Wales

Ooft fair play. I can't call it but will try. Being honest, we all need Welsh rugby to get back in the horse and compete but know the funding/structure issues. Not sure Gatts is still the man either.

1. France

2. Ireland.

3. England.

4. Wales.

I would say I couldn’t understand Gatland coming back. It’s rare for people to go back to places and be a success.

Once I remember how much he’s being paid, I start to understand though.

I think Wales will fare terribly on paper, but actually be a little more encouraging than that in terms of progress, performance.

Reckon England will beat Ireland this year.

The problem we (England) have is that we all know we play against 16. That's the crowd not the ref. Everyone wants to do a number on England. Throw in some fortresses nowadays and as an Englishman it's hard to see a title let alone a GS. But that's good for the game.

Definitely in Irelands favour having France and England in Dublin

As an Englishman I'm hoping to see some consistency in our play and jettison the blitz defence as we're shit at it.

Wales are in a hole and have no ladder just spades so it only gets bigger.

Scotland will miss the Centre influence and be happy to Finish 4th.

Viva Italia against everyone I'd love to see them really find their place in the elite but think really its 2 wins at most

I see the 6 nations almost 4 different groups:

Group 1… Ireland and France

Group 2… England and Scotland

Group 3…. Italy

Group 4… Wales

Now.. I expect group 1 to fight for the championship ,

group 2 can give group 1 a game.. but group 1 should win

Group 3 can give 1 and 2 a fright.. could get a shock if they play well and the other team doesn’t show up…

And wales…. Well…. They will be wales!!!!

First 6 nations game in Paris in 2 years… France by 30 tonight!!!

I am not the most knowledgeable on Rugby Union but always try to watch the 6 Nations and World Cup knockout matches.I think Ireland will edge out France although some of the older players maybe only have this tournament in them before they are past their best and home to France will help them.Off course it wouldn’t be me without doing my bet Ireland to win at 15/8 with Luke Littler to win the Darts Premier League at 6/5 £20 double pays £116.

France and Dupont were on fire last night. Wales are in such a mess, I can’t see them winning any games this year and stretching that 13 game beaten run.

Went to the Scotland game today. Great first half but fell off in second half opening the door for a very good Italy side. We were worthy of the win.

Ireland v England was a great game. Surprised it was as close as it was

My predictions

1/ France

2/ Ireland

3/ Scotland

4/ England

5/ Italy

6/ Wales

I don't think you will get wooden spoon in all honesty but you definitely need to win against Italy."

"France and Dupont were on fire last night.

No spirit, no fight, no cohesion, no patterns, no flair, no skill, no discipline, ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING CLUE what they should be doing!!

Dai, I'm actually sat here with an Italia top on 😂 firing off salvos to all my Welsh mates and some of them have actually said they want to be English right now! That's how bad it is!

Wherever I lay my hat.

I think Ireland will own it but I do hope that the South African B squad (not Bomb Squad, but rather our second side), Scotland, will do well.

Feel sorry for Wales as they are going to get a hiding for the second 6 nations in a row. Italy doesn’t matter, and no one really wants England or France to win…

I've just started watching full contact and find his strat talks hilarious in French with the uncomfortable silences 😂 legend of a man. My claim to fame is he came up to me in a pub and asked what pub is showing the rugby, one of my mates asked if he was one of my old Army mates lol. I had to explain that he was one of the greatest rugby league players to ever pull a jersey on.

My mate has a better claim to fame. He stole his missus and married her 😂

I'm not going to name the freaking minutes...but flick pass when try line beckoned and losing possession down the right which exposed us and we were saved by fumble.

Just didn't think he was on the money today. Maybe because he has set the bar high for himself.

A couple of hairy moments close to our try line were the only issues I saw, both of which he steped out of convincingly, the kicks he missed weren’t his decision so can’t blame him for those! The weakest player for England today was Cowan-dickie, missed lineouts and frankly silly actions at the breakdown, I’m surprised he wasn’t replaced before half time! Oh and Slade is a waste of a centre and has been for years……….but yeh Marcus Smith was poor🤣🤣🤣🤣

"England are back… but not in championship winning form yet I don’t believe.

Willis to come off the bench against Ireland and change the game "

May have to upgrade my prediction to a maybe… just maybe with a little help from the French

It’s simple stuff, basic ball movement and possession. Wales completely failed to cross the gain line, you can’t go backwards through 10 phases and win matches.

Italy have a decent team this year, organised and capable. The mistakes that wales were making are basic schoolboy stuff that a PE teacher would rail against

It’s genuinely baffling. This crop of players are seasoned professionals, many are veterans of international rugby. Their coach is a celebrated individual. How and why is this happening?

You can talk about rebuilding all you like but when they’re not even getting the basics right, not hitting the ball at pace, idly standing until they receive a pass… that’s not rebuilding, that’s simple

I had exactly the same conversations in our club yesterday and everyone is saying the same thing.

Gatlands lost the plot!

It’s inexplicable that someone as astute as him with such a proven track record can be producing such poor performances after having plenty of time to work it out now.

The core of the Welsh squad are very good, the skipper is nailed on for a lions shirt.

Italy playing very well. Scotland looking very competent and England are moving in the right direction, should maybe have delivered more against Ireland but the match yesterday was thrilling.

Who would you drop to give Jac Morgan a start in a Test Jersey?

His opposing numbers from Eng/Irl/Scotland are all better players.

"

I dunno if jac Morgan is a lions test starter for me…. But he should definitely be on the plane

He's going (can you image the howling if no Welsh players make the squad) but I'd say he's a midweek dirt tracker. Probably a captain.

I think that's exactly what he will be. A mid week skipper.

Well I only has 2 Welshman on the plane last week… and now I not sure about Tomas Williams

Shame sio is injured.. he would have been an outside option as captain for me…

Sio vs bundee would be the fight for the lions 12 shirt for me

I think that a penalty try… but if not that’s where the 20 minute red may have been applicable

Anyway, whilst we have the time out.. lions test selections..

Nailed on for me… Gibson-park at 9, Russell 10 , VDM on one wing, James Lowes on the other, Hugo Keenan at 15…

It’s only the centre spots at the back

Scotland only still in this because Ireland have failed to ground the ball.

Scots have offered pretty much nothing so far.

Red cards for a push…. You’ll be asking them to put up a net so you can see if the ball goes through the posts next!!!!

Murrayfield quiet. Job done. Russell off. Just trying to keep the score down now.

Think it's more a case of the Irish and British Lions to be honest. I'm discounting most of Wales and Scotland. I am mentally starting with the Irish team and seeing who will remove each player 1 to 15 from the other nations.

Last year with Australia underperforming I thought it would be a disappointing tour, but with them getting better and some disappointing home nations teams, it's perfectly poised.

Those 2nd row and back row spots are going to be a fight to the death…

Depends on what size squad they want to take… if you take 8 back row’s I think you could take 1.. France based Englishmen are going to be the wildcards… Willis at Toulouse

For as much as people don’t like Farrell jr, you have to believe he will go

It looked like a good shout until Ireland ‘defended’ that second try chance so well.

You never know though, Scotland have come back from more… as we well know 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

They need to save those for the matches against us 🌹

"And Warren Gatland is out - mid tournament 🤦🏻‍♀️"

That is the end of a love affair with Wales, but I think the separation will do both well.

Now the door is open for Farrell to step aside, let Gatts become the Lions coach then select most of the Wales squad, clearly 'based on performance' 😂

The long answer should be Shaun Edwards if he wants the job.. but not midseason…

So I am guessing rob howley or the greatest ginger Neil Jenkins
