So I'm currently on a health and fitness journey and wondering if I should introduce a pre workout drink.
I'm 12 stone down currently having between 1500-1600 calories per day.
I work out in the morning and I'm not a breakfast person so do it on an empty stomach.
I ride 20-22km, walk 2km then do lights weights 6x a week.
Today i felt light headed after my workout so I was wondering if a pre workout would help.
I've no idea what I'm doing so any advice would be welcomed.
Ideally something low calorie and caffeine free.
Thanks in advance x |

Light headed after your workout is low fuel - pre work out wont help. You need to eat before your workout, something like some chicken bites or a snack. Pre work out will likely just make you more tired at the end as your body goes into over drive! |

Firstly, 12 stone down is absolutely fucking incredible. Well done! 👏
Secondly, that's a hell of a lot you seem to be doing, especially with doing weights 6x a week. The general rule of thumb is cardio is great to do fasted but with weights, you want the energy to support that. A pre-workout is great for an energy boost as it contains caffeine among other supplements. Whether or not it would cure your light-headedness, I'm not overly sure about but I might help if you take it just before you do your weights sessions. Good luck on your continuing journey! ![](/icons/rainbow.png) |

Did you drink enough water before hand. That might be the reason for the light headedness. Or you're in too much of a calorie deficit.
In terms of an effective pre-workout, if you're training fasted/on an empty stomach maybe look at BCAA's. You'll find though that most pre-workouts contain caffeine. If you're not too sensitive maybe look at old fashioned black coffee. |

I've competed at a high level in a couple of sports and never needed pre workout. I can understand why it helps some people but it's very much a pep to get you into the gym not a long term fuel.
As others have said light-headedness is lack of fuel, calorie deficit training is effective but you have to have something to burn especially if you're lifting weights.
Sounds like it's gone amazingly well so far though and all the best going forward |

Wishing you all the best with your fitness journey.
You're currently doing a high amount of volume fasted that's why you feel light headed.
A good meal from the previous night will help or in the morning a good source of carbohydrates ( energy) with a source of protein will help. Pre-workout snack
5 days of weight training is the most should do, followed by two days of active rest and 3 data of cardio after your workout.
Take time build up your cardio the once your comfortable increase it to two days of intense cardio ( spin) then on a cardio rest day you can walk for 30-40 minutes on an incline.
A calorie deficit calculator will help you work out a good amount |

I'd try a small starchy snack first, oatcakes & peanut butter or banana.
Pre-workouts are not really worth it, supplementation industry is an unregulated money maker for the most part.
Keep up the good work

I just take creatine with water while I'm at the gym and the usual protein after.
Did try pre workout before and found then a waste of money.
Found eaten a hour before did the trick more.
Say a little pasta dish or rice.
But what work for me won't work for everyone.
Found a lot if information from watching a lot of you tube and asking the one at the gym who look like I want to.
But losing 12 stone is mind blowing and well done you |

OP wow, you have achieved something truly outstanding - very well done! 👏
Breakfast is a favourite meal of the day for me. But if you can't manage a meal, you could try eating a banana to give you fuel. In fact it's what I needed to do today and it really helped me to workout at the gym.I also take creatine mixed with water each day.
I previously tried pre workout shakes and I found they caused my blood sugar to spike and I crashed quickly during my runs. So I no longer use them.
You will need to try various things and find what works for you. But training whilst feeling light headed is not good for you or safe, just incase anything happens to you.
Be good to update us on what things work for you. Best wishes.

I train fasted on a daily basis. Most days I train 9am and now and then I train at 4pm still fasted from dinner the day before. I don't recall ever feeling light headed. I would not add any pre-workout just incase there is an underlying issue. Continue exercising and if it happens get your booty to the doctors.
And congratulations on your achievements so far. We look forward to seeing your results. |

Huge well done on your journey so far!! I couldn't workout without my brekkie!! I eat roughly 3,050 calories and now thinking need to up it as I'm getting more hungry after a heavy weight day.
I prefer to eat smaller meals and snacks though out the day then just 3 big meals |

Thank you all for your kind words and advice.
I think going forward a banana before my workout will the best start. Also cutting down on the weights to 3 days a week.
I had a 2.5kg loss this week.
Here's to getting healthy ❤️ |
