ID checks for adult websites

Ofcom has revealed that adult websites will need to prove that users are over 18 by July 2025.
This means that the websites will have to I.D. Users.
How will that affect the good folks of fab? Are you happy to be ID’d to access this or other adult sites? Will you continue to use them if you do?
It’s all over the news! |

I don't really like anyone I don't know having my personal data. I don't see how I can have any oversight into how it's being used.
The ICO 😂 there's not been effective regulatory body since QUANGOs came into existence, in any sector. Just an excuse to avoid responsibility by demarcation.
I don't think the government provides the necessary protections to an individual to ethically compel them to give up their right to privacy to third parties, in that manner.
I appreciate the reasons for doing so many well be positive, but the onus is on the government to provide said protections if they are going to implement such a law. |

"Don’t see the problem.
No different than other over 18 sites where I’d is required
Yeah, feel pretty much the same. ID is required for many things, not just adult sites."
Yep.
When I order vape coils I get age verified every time.
I don't see an issue. It already exists for many non sex sites that are age related such as gambling.
I've provided ID to many a swingers club for membership. Not bothered in the least. 🤷♂️ |

It's about time
Porn has ruined a generation of boys who have had access to these sites.
It's raised their hedonistic boundaries so much they think all women want is to be chocked while being arse fucked.
So many things online are there to fuck up the youth.
Super computers working out how to keep you locked to the screen.
Remember when a picture in a magazine of a naked woman was enough? |

The government had the opportunity to make it harder to access these sites years ago
An did nothing.
They are in the pockets of the people who own them.
Do your research on the owners of p hub Google etc.
They all have something in common |

I don't know the exact process for verification but I'm uneasy about it, as it will likely lead to greater invasion of privacy, especially with data going outside of the UK.
We should probably have rigidly enforced data connection restrictions for adults, which we've already paid £millioms to establish, which many have not maintained. |

I assume that each connection attempt will have to be verified, to remain within the law. |

I've just seen a tiny bit of the news on this and it seems like it's not going to be too prescriptive initially, in terms of the methodology. Fab will have responsibility for the decision on how they implement it . Age assessment from faces may be acceptable, for example. |

Indeed, and then the darker corners of the Internet suddenly become tempting to some.
It's quite hilarious they think this makes children safer. Mainstream sites will see a drop, but other avenues that should not be travelled, will see an increase in traffic. |

If you go to a club you have to supply I.D. On your first visit. If you do not want to supply I.D. You must think you are doing something wrong or dodgy. Fab like many other sites require I.D.
The real issue may be if sites become require to submit personal data to other databases. GDPR is often breached this way |

The Ashley Madison 'breach' affected women too; it wasn't exclusive to men. In fact the perceived repercussions were worse for women because there was this generalised and alleged viewpoint that all married men had affairs anyway. For women doing it was, apparently, unprecedented. We will never know the truth. |

"I wonder if it happens will people be allowed to state a false age on here."
I think checks for being an adult will need to be reasonable and only to ascertain that you're over 18. It's going to be tougher to get right, for those who actually are 18 and filter those from people who aren't legally eligible.
The system won't be foolproof, as many may share viewing and they'll just validate one person, I'm sure, rather than observe users via their camera, to see what's going on |

I had reason to help search a 13 year old phone not long ago. I was shocked at some things on there and just how normal it made things out to be. Not just Web sites but shared pics as well.
That me that been around swinging clubs watching porn etc more years than care to remember and I was shocked.
At that age yes I had few top shelf mags but no real porn as such.
So maybe it time to have to prove age more likely it's too late

It will be some online digital card that is done with official ID then tgst will give people a number / card to use in sites.
Pornhub has been trying to lead the way for years with the last round of av laws it went no where and I’ll expect thus July date to be bounced back neater time pending review
Unfortunately the government / ofcom / isp and site operators are struggling to reach a practical solution that is good for all parties |

It seems like another way for the powers that be to gather data.
Having read a little bit about it it appears to be private companies that have developed verification software pushing the government to implement it for their own gain. |

Companies looking to make money from age verification have been very active for some years. Inevitably, we'll lose some aspects of privacy, as our data will be very valuable. Many companies actively amalgamate data, from multiple sources, which is how anonymised data can be de- anonymised. It's potentially not done by the first date collector but others who vacuum up data from any sources they can get to. Ofcom etc will have no ability to do anything, further downstream. Not that they have much anyway.
Our hardware and software details, allow us to have detailed unique profiles that are used to track us - not by Fab but other organizations out there. |

An only be a good thing
It will get rid of a proportion of the clowns on here and will definitely improve the site if people have to be a bit more responsible with their profiles. There’s a lot of under 18s currently setting up profiles and having a great time winding folks up and looking at pics etc. |

Oh I'd be VERY flattered at my age if someone thinks I might not be over 18!
No, on a serious note I can (as am sure all can) recognise the need to protect children.
We have to accept Fab will class, under these rules, as a "adult" site the same as porn, gambling etc... However, I am reminded of a discussion in the Forums many, many years ago which questioned the official status of Fab and did it class as porn or whatever. A Fabber purporting to be a solicitor or barrister (I forget which) end up posting very technical and detailed data which "proved" or at least suggested that Fab classes as a "dating site" not and "adult" site. But of course we need to ascertain whether dating sites also class as "adult" under this legislation.

"What if you don’t have a driving license, passport or credit card?
Not all over 18’s possess these things. "
to me a household bills is sufficent enough than having to prove id instead of passport or d license
there not a bank, providing d license or passport is a dangerous way for data leaks to happen.
once you put it in one place for all that data to be collected makes that place really unsafe to hackers/miscreats .
there is even a risk with bank card details no matter what site you visit
as goes for pornhub they did a full block of any visitors due to country/county to the site due to id restriction.
as people just went elsewhere instead
as goes for the data you hand over ( D license and passport ) can you really be reassured that that data will be deleted on request or that it wont be shared or used elsewhere
the answer is nope
pornhub reference on the register is

Contact your network provider, prove you’re over 18 and have the block removed.

"My phone died in Nov and I'm too scared to take it to see if the pictures can be retrieved because of all the fab pics I have on it "
this depends on the type of phone you have and its settings.
photos or videos can be gotten at via the usb pc link
as long as the setting on the phone is not set to press to allow the phone to connect.
you can connect it that way
this is true for those phones that have a faulty battery or a damaged screen.
if you have to confirm to connect on your phone to a pc then its a little bit more ackward |

Exactly! We've already paid, as taxpayers and internet users, for adult restrictions to be in place. The next lot of restrictions will be, probably, as effective and good value for money, as they were.
Plus it will only check 1 person, however many and whoever is watching. It's more effective good investment of taxpayer money, by the conservatives. They wasted £millions on IT for the Rwanda farce system too.

It's probably going to be done independently of sites, so I'm assuming that ex-cons etc will be free to access porn etc. I'm guessing that it's going to be more of a pass/fail test, whether someone is over 18 or not. |
