Paris Hilton, Jeff Bridges and Mel Gibson are among some of the famous people and other billionaires that have lost homes in the wildfires.
It would appear that most of them weren’t living in their homes at the time. Apart from the loss of their personal and sentimental properties I’m finding it very hard to sympathise with them.
Am I being mean??
I’d feel totally different if it was just regular people losing everything. I’d probably donate to the relief fund as I have done in the past. |

Funny how Hollywood was being outed as the cesspit of all that is wrong with show business and now all the evidence has gone up in smoke, due to wild fires, in the middle of winter...
I wonder who many of Epstein's island guests and Diddy's partygoers are sleeping a little easier now? |

Funny how global warming leads to more wildfires 🤷♀️ |

"I’m gonna guess that they will have owned things in the house that money can’t replace, so it’s sucks as much for them as it would for the likes of you or I.
"
Agreed, like I said I sympathise at the loss of personal property, photos etc.
It ok though, it looks like Jamie Lee Curtis foundation is going to raise money in support. |

A tale of 2 halves.
Loss of sentimental items (bad & feel sorry for them)
Ability to deal with practicalities in the immediate aftermath (way easier if you have millions in the bank...so not worried for them in that regard) |

If only there was another tax we could pay to ensure this stops and the millionaires that have "lost everything" are properly compensated for that plastic carrier bag I only used once... |

Why? Are they not humans too? Just because they have done well does that somehow reduce their human needs? |

It looked terrifying and the loss of life is so awful -i can't even think about the wildlife that got trapped
I guess wood is plentiful and cheap in the USA, but I can't understand why you wouldn't have brick built houses in a high fire risk region?? |

"Regardless if they lost their first or 2nd homes they still suffered. There were also 10 deaths. EMPATHY doesn't require being sympathetic."
Most people haven't got a clue what empathy is. They believe it is getting a vicarious thrill imagining themselves suffering something that someone else is. Taking the time to understand what someone else feels and thinks instead of assuming others feel and think the same as we would in their situation is actually difficult to do - particularly when thoughts are clouded by judgement calls like they deserve x or they don't deserve y

They've lost their home or one of them. I guess the financial impact is less but the emotional impact will be the same. I'd still feel sympathy for someone if their car burned out and they weren't in it.
I however feel more sympathy for people with only one home and set of possessions who for whatever reason lose the lot. |

Did the fires only burn wealthy people's 2nd homes or is there a chance the fires don't discriminate between 1st and 2nd homes, large or small homes? |

The fires burned everything in their path but the op was referring to a couple of famous people.
There was a British plumber on telly who'd lost his business |

Yes it might be easier for the wealthy to rebuild a house, but there are normal or working people there. Things that are lost are impossible to replace, including those that have lost their lives to it.
Compassion is lost to so many people nowadays, so sad. |

I recently listened to Billy Crystals autobiography and at numerous times throughout he spoke about his home and how it had once belonged to Roy Rogers and how he had lived there with his wife since 1979.
He repeatedly said it had been a constant in his life, a haven, a place of joy filled with memories of raising his family.
So yes I have sympathy for him and anyone else who has lost a home or loved one regardless of the wealth they worked for many decades to accumulate. |

I also know someone who's son lives in the path of one of the fires. He was able to evacuate to San Diego but has lost all his possessions. |

Do rich people not have feelings the same as the rest of us, will they not feel devastated to lose the little things we all cherish that are not worth much money wise but are priceless in the sentimental value..?

Celebs or not, people are losing hones, property, lives. It's devastating. It's not just about the money, it's memories and big parts of their lives gone.
My sympathy is there.
BUT
The celebs are not living rough, they can be put up in 5 star hotels, in one of their other homes around the state/country/world. They will be fine and no struggle to bounce back. They will be fine. |

Is imagine that for every super wealthy celeb who's lost a home in the fires there's probably 100 regular folks.
Sympathy to everyone affected.
Just waiting for the stories to start of how insurance companies are going to slither their way out of pay outs. |

"Genuinely perplexed by the lack of humanity and hatred toward "rich" people in here. Why the hatred? Why even distinguish at all? " all jokes aside I personally don’t hate them. Don’t agree with anyone being ‘rich’ (personally) but that’s my world view. It’s not personal enough for me to hate them. Except for billionaires. I hate billionaires.
