Seems people are leaving Netflix in their droves due to what Elon musk describes as the woke mind virus.

Every program now seems to be so top heavy to meet their agenda's that it feels forced.

Don't believe me just search overwoke Google.

As a centre left person I always find attacks from the right odd. I was never a fan of corbyn, am not a post modern neo-marxist, and I'm very concerned about the Taverstock/Cass review issue and the systemic failings the nhs stumbled into that have caused untold damage to children. I am empathetic and moderate but libertarian/liberal, an atheist, and have socialist leanings.

Netflix has all sorts of programming - some of it caters to LGBTQ, some caters to women, some to men, etc... They make all sorts. I loved Bridgerton after initially disliking the liberties taken with the regency period due to my love of Austen.

I guess what OP means is that Netflix doesnt cater to his specific right wing tastes. I suggest he sticks to Fox news.

I think the same as pretty much everyone else in the thread.

The “woke” term has been highjacked and used as some kind of derogatory term for the right wing, traditional and conservative (small c) conspiracy theorists. Woke is an inclusivity term. I think familiarising yourself with its origins will be an education.

If you are right wing or conservative (small c), there’s nothing wrong with that either btw (I’m “woke” enough to accept your societal beliefs).

Slight etymological fallacy there. The word has the connotations it has amd can be used perjoratively. It wasn't hijacked as such- it just entered the lexicon and quickly the use evolved

You are correct I think (if I fully understand your meaning).

I will rephrase. The term woke has grown to be used in the context of inclusivity (originally it was coined to specifically relate to African Americans). It has recently been hijacked…etc.

Overwoke implies the existence of underwoke and woke to perfection. I strive to be in that size queen zone of wokeness.

So the woke insult still isn’t working eh? But instead of being creative they’ve doubled down and given it a bigger portion size. Supersized the woke.

I will be quite overjoyed when tesla crashes and the fucker goes bankrupt. They are incapable of making a profit without the EV subsidies that the US government has previously given out, it will be quite delicious if Trump does kill those subsidies. Their sales actually shrank last year, and other global car companies are now making EVs that a 100% better value for money than teslas. In any case musktwats dash into full on fascism has destroyed his own core market of environmental tree hugging friends of the earth type, leaving only the morons that want cybertrucks so that they can play act being post apocalyptic road warriors.

Meanwhile I shall enjoy the knowledge that elmo has such a fragile self image that it is battered by the very existence of a few tv programs that include non-white-cis-male characters.

Amusing about inclusivity yet when someone question's the popular trendy narrative people stat losing their minds.

If this post had been the other way round and the op had received this level of personal insults then claims of bullying would have been said.

So it's ok to bully and insult if the opinion is different shame on you.

I never said I agree with Musk I was quoting him in that obviously there's an issue that's been highlighted even if it's by a manic it's still valid if people feel that they are now being marginalised and surely the whole ethos of the woke movement is to ensure that everyone is treated equally and fairly represented without prejudice be it race, religion or sexual orientation and the fact that major media outlets not just Netflix are going over and above what is a fair representation of everyone the only reason Musk has highlighted it is because he doesn't care about being popular I don't agree with most of what he says but like him I have the right to point out an issue without being insulted and ridiculed.

Thanks

I think the point is that what people call ‘the woke agenda’ is just wider representation and inclusion. Cis het white people are still the overwhelming majority in all TV and media. It’s just that there’s more diversity.

I’m curious as to why seeing different faces and sexualities is such a negative?

If a program isn’t aimed at my demographic, it’s not an issue. I’m not going on CBeebies and complaining about their content not being for me, so why should anyone moan if it’s about a black gay American woman?

This isn’t about TV, this is about conservative white men feeling marginalised and uncomfortable because the world doesn’t revolve around them anymore

I’m not woke, and as a middle aged white man have no need to “stay woke” which is where the word comes from.

But I am sure called woke enough by people who have no idea of its meaning. The overuse of it and incorrect use of it has reduced its impact which I guess is what the likes of Musk, Trump and Bannon wanted.

On Netflix it is not woke or overwoke no doubt Trump is planning to use the DA from When They See Us in some government office and has asked Elon to post some negativity.

I do think that Musk is getting dangerous, Facebook decision to remove fact checkers is in part a response to X and the election of Trump, these billionaires aren’t stupid and would rather not anger the president elect.

That’s not how language works, definitions should convey meaning otherwise we’re just making noises

Everything is woke. If you stand up against it, you are penalised by everyone who is woke. I've lost quite a few friends because of this woke agenda. I find that the simple-minded (sheep people) are woke and are completely hooked. People who are woke are easily manipulated, hence they will follow and do everything the next person does, hence the phrase (sheep people) Simple-minded cattle heading towards slaughter.

"Amusing about inclusivity yet when someone question's the popular trendy narrative people stat losing their minds.

This isn’t about TV, this is about conservative white men feeling marginalised and uncomfortable because the world doesn’t revolve around them anymore "

I never use streaming services because their quality is crap.

Every dark scene looks like ass and the bitrate goes to shit once there's too much action on screen.

4K UHD Bluray for me it is

I could say very much the same thing about people still clinging to the whole sheeple concept, that somehow unpopular opinions are more valid. Maybe they are unpopular because they are not based on any facts. Wanting all people to be treated well should be a popular opinion as its clearly the moral thing to do. It's really so simple if you don't like a particular show watch a different one. The Netflix catalogue is huge.

While you are not entirely wrong for some people. The absolute hilarity of this argument is to think that the "other side" is any less easily manipulated or any less sheep people. They are different sides of the same coin.

This is exactly what I am meaning in my above comment. There is a reason Trump is so successful, because he is a master of manipulation and oozes charisma towards the simple minded on the other side and he knows it, embraces it, and takes full advantage of that skill. It's hard not to be in awe of how masterful he is at it.

Yes, an example of a fictional character who, let's be honest, can be any colour and a real life historical person who was black and how being black was a pretty massive part of his story. Can you see how one can be changed and not the other? Please say yes so I can still have hope for humanity 🤞

WOKE MOB

"A large well informed group of people with basic empathy who are compassionate, committed to dismantling injustices and making the world a better place for all of humankind."

Happy to be considered 'woke'. 🤷‍♂️

I'm always more worried by people who have issues with the word and why they see it as a negative. Seems any challenge to the status quo results in meltdowns and outrage, often when it's things that don't affect or impact their lives in the slightest, but improve those of others.

It's a funny old world........

representation in main characters matters significantly because of the visibility and influence those roles have. Supporting characters contribute to diversity, but main characters carry a different level of cultural and emotional impact.

even for characters with such a history of a main character? And as for new films a diverse mix is brilliant i couldnt agree more but old characters, icons sporting figures ect in remakes i dont agree with, i think it makes a mokery of the original person/character ect and to do it for diversity sounds a bit like a box ticking exercise rather than "the best person" for the job/role

The ethnicity or gender of any character, whether fictious or historic, personally doesn't bother me as long as the performance is good. At the end of the day it's Art.

Let's not forget that Robbie Williams is portrayed by a monkey in his new film.

For the record Idris Elba would've been a great James Bond regardless of whether Ian Fleming based the character on some white bloke.

Plus there's been loads of white male historical figures played by white male actors that look nothing like them but it doesn't seem to attract the same outrage?

And as for new films a diverse mix is brilliant i couldnt agree more but old characters, icons sporting figures ect in remakes i dont agree with, i think it makes a mokery of the original person/character ect and to do it for diversity sounds a bit like a box ticking exercise rather than "the best person" for the job/role

Again, it’s a regenerating time Lord. If there was ever a character that is perfect for including a wide range of actors, it’s Dr Who."

tbh ive never watched it so couldnt care less lol my point is only that in my opinion if they did i beleive with the following it has viewings would drop, a little like the new little mermaid.

"The ethnicity or gender of any character, whether fictious or historic, personally doesn't bother me as long as the performance is good.

Some white block who died for his country

Which for the record is fact unlike you infact checked assumption..

Many women and people of different ethnicities have also died for this country. This is also a fact "

The most accurate physical representation of the original Bond was Daniel Craig. The tall, handsome, brown haired, brown eyed earlier actors were nothing like what was described in Fleming's books. So, we can totally discount the most famous Bonds, like Roger Moore Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan.

From the author's pen:

"slim build; a 3 in (76 mm) long, thin vertical scar on his right cheek; blue-grey eyes; a "cruel" mouth; short, black hair, a comma of which rests on his forehead"

"Amusing about inclusivity yet when someone question's the popular trendy narrative people stat losing their minds.

So as man of a certain age and ethnicity and sexuality my opinion isn't valid anymore ,I'm not allowed to say anything because of what people before me have done?

Yup really inclusive that "

Why would you stand up against inclusivity?

I will ask you the same question… why don’t you think you are “woke”? What is it about you that isn’t “woke”?

I am not a "sheep person". I am an individual. I have my own mind. I don't follow the BS. I am definitely not woke."

It's a funny old world........"

Jewish men from the Galilee of the first century AD were not light skinned, blue eyed or light haired. That image of Jesus was influenced by the traditional images of Greek and Roman gods, once Christianity had been adopted by those areas.

"This has been an enlightening thread.

I did find it hilarious seeing the Dr Who outrage for going “woke” and the threats of a boycott from certain people.

There are 16 Doctor Who actors.

15 were white.

15 were male.

sorry but certain characters just have to stay how they are in regards to colour, james bond and nelson mandela for instance just wouldnt work

I hope this was tongue in cheek. You just compared a fictional character to a real life figure who fought apartheid in South Africa... You honestly can't make this shit up

i gave 2 examples i didnt compare anyone and i meant as actors playing the characters in a film if that weren't clear

Yes, an example of a fictional character who, let's be honest, can be any colour and a real life historical person who was black and how being black was a pretty massive part of his story. Can you see how one can be changed and not the other? Please say yes so I can still have hope for humanity 🤞

Joe, it's all just DEI, right?! No hope for humanity, I'm pretty certain of it.

I hope all the churches start racially accurate representation soon. Jesus wasn't a white, blue eyed dude

It's perfectly possible that Jesus was light-skinned, fair-haired and blue-eyed.

It isn't clear Jesus was from Nazareth and so possibly not from Galilee. Nazareth wasnt really a town back then. People dont know why he was called the Nazarene in the bible and kinda retconned the Nazareth thing.

This would make a great Netflix mini series wouldn’t it ?

Angela’s Joliet as Jesus

Idris Elba as Mary

CGI as Joseph

Musk as the ass

Who the fuck could play the three wise men / women / he / she / they / them …

Is anyone sure the three wise men were wise? Or men?

You're not far off there! The Roman army was made up of legions and auxiliary cohorts. Auxiliary cohorts, basically, were made up of soldiers from lands that Rome had conquered and they conscripted warriors from those places. There were a lot of these. Young men would join up willingly, and unwillingly, but would be guaranteed to be fed, to be paid, and some adventure. On many occasions, they would take their women with them too. There were auxiliary cohorts called Legio Africanus, made up mostly of African native tribal warriors and their women followers, Legio Macedonius, Legio Gallica, the French legion. When these units were decimated in battles, they were joined with others to form new legions. The Roman military unit in Judea at the reported time of Jesus' birth, was an amalgamated legion of 6 auxiliary cohorts, called the Legio X Fretensis. The main bulk of this legion was made up of soldiers from a then-disbanded unit, the Legio Germanicus. It's perfectly possible that Jesus was the son of your typical blond-haired, blue-eyed Teutonic tribal warrior. Mary is also likely to have been fair-skinned, as many women from that area still are. Lighter-skinned women have always had more "value" in cultures where skin tones vary greatly, and it's possible that Mary was the daughter of a noble, well-to-do family. Combine this with a blonde-haired blue-eyed gene, and there you have the very real possible description of Jesus.

Jesus was a Semitic Jew and whether from Nazareth, Bethlehem or frankly anywhere in that geographic area, he would not have been light skinned or haired or eyed.

For reference, I'm about as light skinned and eyed as they come, with middling hair.

The Christian bible says that God was his father, but I'm sure you don't believe that, it probably isn't true. Are you assuming that Joseph was his father? Because that's possibly not true either. There is a widely believed theory that Mary was r*ped by a Roman soldier, and that the "virgin birth" idea was used to provide legitimacy for the child.

Fuck have to make the mini series a 18 rating if that happened "

Jesus' mother must have been a Jewish woman (who would have had dark hair, eyes etc) otherwise he would not have been considered to be Jewish himself. All research carried out into what Jewish people from that geographic region would have looked like at the time, points to very dark hair, eyes and olive skin. Depictions of the version we're familiar with only become evident after the Romans and co. adopted Christianity and it spread West. The Romans also did things like switch the birth to the period that was previously Saturnalia. Again, evidence suggests around April or May, not December.

Isn't Christ depicted as having brown hair and beard. Never seen any image of him blonde and fair. I know early images of him showed lots of variety.

But in more modern eras he's been depicted as brown hair, brown beard, typically Mediterranean, Robert Powell in Jesus's of Nazareth kind of look.

He's often portrayed with lily white skin and blue eyes in Christian imagery and some include light brown/dark blonde hair. As a Semitic Jew from the 1st century, he would not have had long flowing hair like a Medieval monk, nor a long flowing beard. The infant Jesus is frequently depicted as whiter than white and yes, with blonde hair.

The most widely published image of Jesus is "Head of Christ" by Sallman and it has a blue eyed, white European appearance.

More recent TV and films stuff has made more of an effort to be realistic but throughout most of history, depictions have been Westernised because the people drawing/painting them have invented their own version. And other stuff too.

"Seems people are leaving Netflix in their droves due to what Elon musk describes as the woke mind virus.

Every program now seems to be so top heavy to meet their agenda's that it feels forced.

Don't believe me just search overwoke Google.

"

I stopped watching law and order around season 19 as each episode seemed to be delivering some kind of message, I've noticed the same in other shows like 911 lonestar
