I've had hypothyroidism for 35 years. If my levothyroxine dose is correct I maintain a steady weight. If it's even slightly over I lose weight very quickly or gain it.
GPs know very little about managing the condition. If you are able see a specialist in that are of médecine. I did five years ago and I now take different doses on alternate days and have had no problems. |

Sorry to hear this.
I'm lucky not to have the same, but have had people with it nearly all my life.
My mother has an over active thyroid, my wife has an under active Thyroid, amongst a few other debilitating conditions. I know the gp can prescribe the weight loss injections, but only in extreme circumstances.
I wish you well with it.
All the best

I unknowingly had an overactive thyroid and am now on medication that takes my thyroid out of action / regulates it to a more acceptable level
I will need to stay on the meds until at least Feb 2026
Net result is that I have already gained over a stone in weight in around 3 months
My self confidence has followed my libido out of the door
I have a review this month so let's see what happens |

To everyone with hypo or hyper thyroid issues.
Please ask your doctor to refer you to someone who can really sort your medication out. GPs have a one size fits all approach and as long as you're within the accepted parameters they're happy even if you're displaying symptoms. I learned this the hard way. |

Also if your medication is adjusted you need another blood test in 3 to 6 months rather than a year. If you're displaying symptoms between your yearmt blood test don't be afraid to ask for one early. |

Does anyone else find losing weight hard due to throid problems?"
You will have it harder than most however it does not mean it's bit possible. It just means you have it harder than the average person. |

"Mine has hardly been stable since I was first diagnosed, my doctor just doesn't seem to know what he's doing
And I just feel like I'm wasting his time" you should request a blood test to check if your even on the right dose of medication that could help you to |

Absolutely agree with this!,I was having bloods taken nearly monthly during treatment for Hyperthyroidism, now im medically induced Hypothyroidism i am being tested at 3 monthly intervals for 1st year as my Blood pressure and Diabetes blood sugar levels are all over place, but in past 6months with exercise and healthy eating ive been told i can half the Metformin(diabetic meds) and also drop 75% on the Canadasarten (blood pressure med) |

Drs will usually assume that if you're not bothered and your thyroid function is within the accepted range that it's ok. However if it's near the bottom end you might need a tweak. Have you got the NHS app? If so get a blood test done then look at the results and research what they mean. Levothyroxine comes in 25mg increments which leaves you over or under if you need for instance 87.5 mg and can only be prescribed 75 or 100mg. |

Tell me about it OP. I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid over 25 years and on lifetime medication. I find it almost impossible to loose weight. I can eat very healthy, tracking all foods, be in a calorie deficit and work out at the gym regularly, but don't loose anything. It's absolutely soul destroying at times. I am trying to accept that I'll always be the size I am and just focus on staying strong and healthy instead of focusing on weight loss.

Mine was near the bottom end so I went up from 175 of levothyroxine to 200 that was in October,I've had 2 blood tests appointments cancelled since so I really don't know what's happening |

OP Good luck with it … it’s a condition which really affects your body and indeed mental health too
Most doctors have a general average skill in my view so if you have the cash - spend it on getting a consultation privately or least a second opinion
Very best with it sincerely it’s debilitated long term for sure

Hey op, yes I have the same struggle to manage weight. My last blood review was good so I’m on the correct dosage. I’ve found im more likely to maintain weight by eating smaller more frequent meals. I know not everything works for everyone the same way but is it a possibility you could look at?
I would definitely ask them to rebook your blood test to make sure you’re on the correct dose. |

Your GP should have referred you to a Endocrinology nurse practitioner who is a specialist in the field and will take over your Thyroid treatment from the GP and can prescribe prescriptions and authorise bloods |

20 years for me then earlier this year one of my levels went overactive and I had to reduce my thyroxine which then made me more underactive, went to endocrinology who blamed the blood test despite me feeling dreadful and being signed off work.
I also cut wheat and gluten from my diet, it does make a huge difference |

This! Some people with hypothyroidism have an inability to convert T4 (in levothyroxine) to T3, which is the metabolically active thyroid hormone. GPs cannot prescribe T3, only hospital consultants. Waiting lists to be seen are very long, I've waited since October 2023 so far with an appointment pencilled in later in Jan, unless it's cancelled. |
