...just ignore the scaremongering and just go about life like we did 30 or 40 years ago?
If it looks cold - put a coat on
If it looks like rain - take a brolly
If it's snowing - see rain and add sturdy shoes
If the snow sticks - build a snowman and go sledging |

I did get a bit fed up yesterday of weather people and newscasters telling me that ice is slippery. I have known that since primary school when we got told off for making skids that old people could fall on. |

As someone who used to be part of a SAR team I'm delighted that people are more risk averse rather than heading up mountains ill equipped for the sake of their social media pics.
Covid lockdowns were challenging for those tasked with dealing with the insta idiots. |

"I'm not sure if the media reports about the cold are for you? I've seen a lot of messages that mention the risk to the elderly and vulnerable. So if those prevent death to those I'm all for it. "
I think the promotion of warm hubs and suggestions of looking in on elderly neighbours are great. I do think that the main news channels have gone a bit overboard on telling people that ice is slippery. |

I bet the people in Little Bollington agree it's all scaremongering about the weather, after the Bridgewater Canal collapsed and flooded it with a zillion cubic metres of water and ditto the next village from us which was completely submerged on NYD - people are out of there homes and will be for many months and now we're likely to get a good dose of snow to make the clean up that bit harder.
We haven't been affected by the weather in the slightest and don't intend going out in the snow, but we're not so complacent that we think it'll never happen to us, or as dismissive just because we're alright, Jack. |

In Leeds there’s definitely scare mongering. They’ve even pre-emptively cancelled bin collections tomorrow and throughout the week. Some businesses have announced they won’t be open Sunday, and in my workplace people have said they won’t be in on Monday.
It’s just normal winter weather. In fact it’s pretty mild compared to winters past.
I’m not sure how those in power in the media/councils get away with being so OTT. They need to realise not everyone is a wimp. |

That collapse is due to poor engineering of a man made canal built 250 years ago. It’s not a natural tributary. It’s a crappy embankment that hasn’t gone through the thousands of years of compression and compacting that real riverbeds and valleys go through to maintain their strength.
So yes it’s fear mongering to try and frame that as something else.

The fact is that the heavy rainfall triggered the bank to collapse.
Why was the village next to us completely flooded? Why are people now concerned about the impact of a deep freeze on their flooded homes? Scaremongering? Absolutely not. |

"Presumably the Mersey flooding at various points along its course recently was just poor engineering? The riverbed not properly compacted? "
I think the OPs point was the fact that the state/media/modern world spends far too much time treating us all like idiots purely to fill up airtime.
Yes there are some exceptional events such as those you mention, but I don't think that was his point tbh. |

We have our own micro climate where I live as we’re in the Valleys (so it rains A LOT) but also in a Valley within a Valley, so it’s usually milder than the news alerts reckon.
However, I went outside today and it actually smelt cold. I haven’t smelt it that cold since I was a kid.
Probably makes no sense but I know what I mean!

That's me, but I don't build snowmen anymore, can't stand snowflakes |

Russia has been threatening nuclear war for what 2 years now and they keep shrinking the size of Mars bars, but all we seem to care about are sea turtles getting straws up their noses.
I think the world is too surreal now for scaremongering. Things just trend, gather momentum and then it's as if nothing happened a month later. |

"This about weather warnings?
Helpful to know about adverse weather and make informed decisions. I don’t think that’s ‘woke’ just sensible with modern means of conveying information "
It's the unnecessary additional OTT adjectives that get on my tits. It's January, it snows, it's cold, it freezes. Always has, always will.
No need for words like "horror" or "deadly", etc... |

And just like that it's doing its job, regardless of your reaction, you are talking about it. Drumming up momentum and just helping spin the wheel.
They use those words for that exact reason. Just as headlines have always done for years, grab them with the impactful buzzword, or use part of a quote heavily out of context. It's nothing new.
I mean the media blows things out of proportion... Just as people blow "scaremongering" out of proportion.
It is sort of a take your own advice kind of deal, don't get worked up over it. Ignore it. Don't bring attention to it. |
