I dont have a 70 grand car and never have done. I buy a car inline with my spending power and one consideration is the maintenance and how expensive service and spares will be. Maybe some people do not worry about that at the point of sale and then find they have to worry about it after? |

I always half the oil change intervals on mine. Did it two weeks ago, the oil cost me £60 for 5ltrs of Mobil-1 10w-60 fully synthetic.
I never scrimp on my cars, without it I can't work or see my kids. I save money by doing some of the work myself (although I would never attempt a cam belt change on an Alfa, that's a jib for Autolusso)... |

My car is a tiny, economical town car. But I always make sure I get it serviced properly - it costs more but is worth it in the long run and I am saving money all the time on it. £35 a week on fuel (and I do more than 100 miles a week commuting, etc), £30 a year tax and low insurance.
When I was married hubby insisted on having Mercs or Beamers and got them done cheap at a local garage instead of taking them to the dealers. He always had problems. I never did. |

That's because main dealers don't have a clue...lol
I use an Alfa specialist (not main dealer) they're far cheaper and I've been there when a dealers has called them and asked for advice...lol |

I actually change tyres from winter to summer and back and I buy the best tyres I can get. |

Being a tyre fitter I can tell you that a Michelin has 300 components in its construction,, a budget has 150-200,, plus to save money budget tyres are actually narrower than a premium,, |

Do the more expensive tyres mean a better fuel economy? |

I use Smart Mercedes where I bought the car and where I always serviced my last Smart. They do an excellent job and often give me a discount as a long-standing customer. All work is guaranteed and if they don't do it right (which has been once in 8 years) then they put it right at no extra cost. They will also give me a courtesy car at no cost. |

"10w60 i can get you for £40 5lt car lube all car oul brands use the same stuff even castrol is cheaper than that!"
I wouldn't touch Castrol...lol
10w-60 is still a fairly unusual grade, no many cars use it that's why its so expensive (just the new BMW's and a few Alfa's as far as I'm aware). |

Combination of things give you better fuel economy,,, correct pressures,, alignment, castor and camber, if u have fuel efficient tyres fitted - usually the leading brands as they use more silica rubber compounds,, if your car is regularly serviced,, all those things affect your mpg, |

Oil certainly is not just oil lol,, certain cars have certain oils,, from long life oils,, different viscosity ie thick to thin oils,, mineral oils, semi synthetic to fully synthetic, the list goes on. |

You have different weights and viscosity of oil.most modern cars will, for instance, require 10w-40 semi synthetic but if you put that in my car it would burn it and cause damage. Then you have mineral oils, semi synthetics and fully synthetics which are blends of esters and crude oil by-products. Many high quality oils also have additives for reduction of engine wear, longer life and better cold start protection.
Oil is one thing that is not worth scrimping on as it really is the lifeblood of an engine. Mine gets changed either every 6000miles or 6-months, whichever comes first. |

Eagle F1's on the boxter at the moment happier with them than I was with the Conti sports.
Oh and Mobil 1 0-40 for me. |

I believe the problem most owners have with owning the more expensive marques is the fact they cannot sell them off and get something cheaper. With petrol and diesel heading for the £7 a gallon price tag, owning something which does approx 18-25 miles per gallon means they are stuck in the situation where no one will buy it off them so they are stuck with a rapidly depreciating vehicle with high running costs and little retail value.
Running an prestige car on a shoestring is not possible and lets face it those who buy them have little/no mechanical aptitude as they are usually above manual work and sit in an office somewhere crunching numbers, they think economising on oil and other consumables is the way to cut costs. |

I actually got the price I paid wrong! I paid £40 for the oil and £60 for the thermostat! All delivered free and ordered from carparts4less.
Yes, thermostats are bloody expensive for Alfa's, had it been a Ford Focus I would have paid around £8! |

I have a decent car, if it's due a service I ring a few of the main dealers close to me and compare the prices offered. These often varie from a few quid to a couple of hundred quid. The same for tires, again I'll ring a few places get a few quotes, and get the most bang for my buck. If getting the best financially viable deal is deemed tight then so be it! I would never fit/use substandard parts ect, I just look to get the best deal possible. |
