York

Who’s looking to sign up in the new yr and stick to it? Any favourite suggestions in York? Anyone looking for a gym buddy to stay motivated?

Personally I would never want a gym buddy. In my experience they always let you down and then ruin your momentum. Go by yourself, headphones in and get in, get shit done and get out.

X2

Plus can just sit and conserve energy between sets rather than have to change plates back and forth

I get your point, but I work long hours and have to fit training in around that, so I’m thinking a gym buddy will help with motivation and commitment by not crying off!

your wildest dreams,

I’ve gone back n forth on this. I think it may be a good incentive to go if you’re lacking motivation but if they bail, do you not go? I think you have to have the motivation to do it for yourself not anyone else. I’m with the others on this, I like to stick my headphones on and lose myself. I know there are plenty people around if I’m stuck with something or want advice

Brum - ish

Gym buddies are only a good thing if you head there together then go do your own thing.

It’s nice to check in with somebody as you go but expecting to have the same goals is unrealistic and means one of you compromises if you try to align exercises.

I think it depends on how often or how long you've been going to the gym.

I returned back to the gym back in the summer after a long time away and i found it helpful to go with someone the 1st few times

We didn't do the same routines but we checked in on each other. Once I was comfortable I when on my own.

I have been out of actioned and haven't been to the gym since the beginning of October. I've been doing rehab at home and then a private studio.

I am now able to go back to the gym and do a full routine and I really would like a buddy, to just help me through the door again.

Not to sound like one of those fitness influencer bellends but if you have to rely on motivation you won’t get where you want to be. You need to be disciplined.

That was the worst thing about leg day with my wife. Unloading 100+kg of plates between every set was a nightmare.

I had a gym buddy and it was amazing...he was training to be a PT and came from a rugby coaching background. He was retired, so had flexibility around timing. He would often be the reason I got my ass in gear and went consistently -i still do the program he designed for me. I miss him every day xxx

That’s the best way. I’ve got a friend I train with maybe once or twice a month he’s a little bit stronger than me so pushes me to go harder but I could never train with him full time, one of us would let the other down eventually and then try and jump back in and change each others workout split.
