I've just had delivered "sustain me"by Barbara O'Neil.

Before I start reading this book, it's got me thinking about or curious to know if anyone else is interested in or uses alternative remedies.

I don't think using these are a bag of poo, as some potions has been around for centuries and been pasted down through the generations.

If I have a cough i will take a spoonful of honey and I'll inhale steam for blocked sinuses or nose. Other than that I prefer traditional médecine.

My mum thought diet could cure anything. And I once spent a week in bed as a child with a nasty sinus infection that she tried to cure with lemon barley water.

They've been passed down through the generations because until very recently most people had no access to anything else. They either couldn't afford it or it didn't exist.

Whilst I don’t wish to put alternative medicines in the hocus catagory, I can’t help feeling that a lot of them became less used/popular because more effective remedies became available, so it would be a bit of a step backwards to go back to them. I’m sure many modern treatments can trace their heritage back to some of these but let’s keep moving forward with an aim for improvement

I do believe though that many people could improve their health through diet. Just limiting the fast food and sugar laden stuff would do it.

Forward movement yes however people need to understand that some things don't need modern medicine and GPs need to stop pandering to some people on this.

Antibiotics is a prime example.

"Barbara O'Neill is an Australian alternative health care promoter who advertises unsupported health practices described as misinformation and a risk to health and safety by the New South Wales Health Care Complaints Commission. She does not have any recognised qualifications and did not finish nursing training."

Woof.

"An investigation found that she provided dangerous advice to vulnerable patients, such as telling those with cancer to forego prescribed chemotherapy for bicarbonate of soda, and to give infants unpasteurised goat's milk."

Sounds like a class act.

These are my thoughts as well.

Sunlight, exercise, don't over indulge daily, try to improve quality of sleep.

Sure, open to anything that works. But blindly using something because it's old, doesn't cut it, without evidence.

The misuse of medicine, whether conventional or alternative, is a totally separate issue

I prefer to rely on science. Ben Goldacre has written some excellent books on this.

There's also the old joke about the homeopath who had a bath and died of an overdose.

I started having apple cider vinegar instead of the omeprazole that I was takung every day for years, cleared my heartburn in no time.

I also took devils claw instead of diclofenac. Both alternative remedies have worked for me

Apart from the fact that the discovery of pencillin and subsequent development of other other antibiotics has prevented millions of deaths worldwide

I think there is a lot of value in complementary therapies, and I think some alternative medicines need to be viewed with caution.

Science has given us some amazingly effective drugs like paracetamol, Triptans & antibiotics that I wouldn’t think twice about reaching for, but I have also practiced Qigong & Aromatherapy for over 30 years and they are also very effective.

I make and use my own headache oil which works a treat as well as a sleep oil and a herbal bag that I smell to help me sleep.

Plant based therapy has been around since forever and many medicines borrow from the past, with a modern twist.

I have used alternative for years and find it good with no side effects.

Being a professional driver I have to be extra careful of medication especially with the drug driving charges. Most of them will show up on a roadside test and you will be charged under the law. The fact that they were prescribed by a doctor will not be acceptable to the judge.

Precisely, used responsibly they have been game changing.

Infections from what we would now class as relatively trivial wounds were regular killers less than a century ago.
