Should perfumes only be gender based?

Jump to: Newest in thread

By *hagTonight OP   Man 5 weeks ago

From the land of haribos.

I listened to an interesting program about perfumes, they talked especially about the unisex ones, where it is about equality,

The woman presenter didnt like those because, she said how those unisex ones was too manly for her and that she didnt enjoy the smell from it, she added that her preference was the sweeter fragrances like, vanillia, jasmine, the sweeter fragrances in general not the manly ones.

It was a long discussion about it, to cut it short, they concluded it by saying that perfumes should be by gender, so you smell that fragrance is from a man and that is from a woman.

What is your view about the unisex ones, do you agree with her? Whilst both can be used. I agree more with her that perfumes only should more be gender based, also, ladies, what is your favourite perfume?

I've liked some of the unisex ones.

I like certain smells on my skin. Usually citrussy or bright ones.

Some scents are more traditionally masculine or feminine and are marketed as such. I know women who wear aftershave because they prefer that particular smell on themselves, though.

The first one I remember buying that was marketed as such, was CK one. I still have a bottle floating around somewhere.

I've always bought more masculine scents, more spicy and oud based rather than floral and feminine. It's down to personal choice. I don't think about gender and scent. I notice when people smell good and especially when they smell like their personality. Jo Malone has done a good job on not getting hung up on gender.

When I was a teenager it was fashionable for all genders to wear Brut.

My opinion is that if you like how a perfume smells, wear it. We need to get away from assigning gender appropriateness to every damn thing.

I like women to smell floral and feminine and I like to smell masculine.

I like to wear typical masculine perfume from time to time, when there’s someone I could „borrow” it from but never actually bought one for myself. Maybe I should put it on my Christmas gift list

I'd rather look in the women's section for a perfume.

I've not smelled a mens' scent I'd like to wear.

That doesn't mean we have to stick to the gender they are advertised as.

A scent can be worn by anyone.

If they're labelled as men or women it's easier to go to the section you want.

Some are unisex though. I love Jo Malone Myrrh and Tonka. I think it's advertised as unisex.

Of course they should - I don't want to go through every single bottle trying to find the sort of scent I'm after. If a woman wants a more masculine scent then she is still able to buy a man's scent, and vice versa.

I'm very lucky to have over 70 different bottles and Tom Ford bitter preach is my favourite.

But then lt depends on my mood and weather.

This time of year spice bomb is lush and when it become lighter and a may get a bit of sun i go for issy or Italian love.

If something smell sweet and fresh I won't care what gender it's linked too.

I have the confidence to pull off all smells and lucky to have skin that smell good with it

The concept of masculine scents and feminine scents is a social creation. Similar to male clothes and female clothes.

I have male relatives that used scents marketed for women, as the scents worked with their skin and no-one knew the difference.

My view is that the unisex scents are a marketing ploy.

I don't use perfumes at all, so I'm not sure I'm qualified to comment, BUT I think the gendering of products is ridiculous. Just wear what you like - scent, clothing, footwear. Have your hair how you like. Etc.

Wear whatever smell you prefer.

Wear it for you, not somebody else.

I prefer scents aimed towards autumn and winter seasons. So I wear them anytime. I sometimes wear the spring/summer fragrances in the winter /gasp 😱

I encourage people to do the same with masculine/feminine/unisex scents.

Ton ford fragrances are my favourite, alot of then are unisex. Lost cherry for example, quite a feminine scent but it smells good on me. There's alot more to perfumery than meets the eye. Your skin type, sweat, pores, and own body chemistry can have many different effects on the scent

One of the scent's I love. Which is a cheapo one designed for teenage girls has been discontinued (at least as the EDT) as the reviews were full of moms complaining that their daughters were receiving unwanted attention.

I've still got 40ml left and the stuff is a man magnet.

I think perfume adds should have some sort of explanation with them, either I'm missing something, but they make absolutely no sense to me.

Or they have a plot line that makes Shakespeare look like Janet and John.

Wear what fragrance suits you and your personality. Don't go with marketing , brand or gender. Some people wear different scents whether it's day or night. I remember Kouros in the 80s being a popular scent for females to wear

I’ve worn perfumes as well as colognes for years. If a scent has the right notes, it doesn’t matter who it’s supposed to be for, I’ll wear it regardless. I enjoy the unisex, but there is something exclusive about wearing d&g the one or estée lauder bronze goddess that have put me in a position of power I never knew

Personally I think it's a bit sad. Simply on principle people should feel uninhibited to find the fragrances that feels natural to them and brings them joy. So I have absolutely no problem with getting rid of the divide on shelfs.

It's not like your going to bring the collapse of society or anything like that. Most men and women will still continue to pick certain types of fragrance or products known to be more masculine or feminine to their taste. It just would help give everyone the freedom to experiment or seek non conforming fragrances without judgment. And surely a world without limitations where people are free to just do what comes natural is a better place for everyone?

I wear Penhaligon's the Tragedy of Lord George. It's a masculine fragrance, but it's one I love and people who get close enough to smell it on my skin tend to compliment it.

I've never found a unisex fragrance I've loved, but I'm quite pernickety about perfume.

It’s an absolute pet peeve of mine that fragrances are gendered. Scent doesn’t have inherent gender. What is considered “masculine” or “feminine” in fragrances has changed massively over the last hundred years. Honestly people should just wear what they like the smell of.

There are some notes that are traditionally masculine, like tobacco and leather, which I really don’t like. Too much sandalwood neither. I prefer something spicy, citrus, aromatic, which is where I think the unisex space lies. If you go further into the really feminine stuff like white florals, then that doesn’t work for me either. My current favourites are Mon Guerlain, L’Interdit, maybe something heavier like Poison Girl in the evening, or lighter like Coco Mademoiselle or Calandre on summer days. You really have to fit it to your mood and the occasion.

Why bother?

It's just a marketing ploy designed to suck in a portion of the population that did not purchase perfumes in the past.

"Like others, I think gendering of perfume (and most other things) is absurd.

Disagree! I think it makes sense as men (generally) prefer to wear different scents to women so gendering just makes it easier to find in the shop.

It's similar for clothes- male clothing is made to fit the male body. There's nothing stopping women using male toiletries and clothing (and vice versa) the gender segregation just helps shoppers to find what they are most likely to want a bit easier.
