At this point I would say it's somewhere between a myth and a meme. Even if Sydney university really did do a study in the distant past nobody using the phrase in their profile today is going to be pestered by a researcher from Australia.
Humans are social animals, you see enough people doing something you may feel the need to copy paste it without even considering the factuality of it.
Some people feel the need to have a "disclaimer" on their profile, this one comes pre-written even if it makes no sense.

All these 'disclaimers' n legal notifications that people put in there profiles are a complete waste of time.
They serve only to clog up the server and are pointless.
The so called survey warnings etc are at least 20yrs old.
I wouldn't worry about it.  |
