St George's day. For all those rabid xenophobes and jingoists here's an interesting fact. His father was Greek and his mother was from Palestine. He became an officer in the Roman Army before being martyred for his faith. Funny how he is a symbol for England then! |

St George is not just a saint if england. He is also the saint of Catalan, a northern province of space. You'll spot the red cross hidden away on the Barcelona flag.
No one ever seems to slate st Patrick or st Andrew. Everyone seems to join in those celebrations, but very few remember our own st's day. |

"The flag of St George also has an interesting history.
"
Ooh really? Shall have to go Google that!
I do know that he is revered in a lot of different cultures and countries and is a bit unique in that he is also known and respected in Muslim cultures too, not just Christian. The story of the slaying of the dragon, for example, supposedly took place near Beirut. I know that he is known in Iraq as my ex was from there. |

I was NOT slating anything or anyone. But I was making a point about xenophobes using a symbol which is connected to someone foreign, actually. |

He is recognised as a saint or hero in a lot of folklore around Europe and the Middle East. |

Catalonians celebrate St George far more than the English do, 'Sant Jordi is highly revered in the Catalan region.
Red roses sell by the millions and they are scattered in the streets of Barcelona and Tarragona like a carpet, books are also traditionally given as gifts.

I wasn't offended. Just making my point. I agree - what is 'English'? The 'indigenous' peoples of these isles are, or were, the Cornish and Welsh who were pushed to the edges by the influx of foreigners conquering and colonising such as the Jutes, Angles, Celts, Saxons, Norsemen (the Vikings), Romans, French, Dutch (William of Orange?), etc.
The cross of St George represents a person born in the Middle East of Greek origin who is revered by Muslims (even as late as early 20th century).
And yet, the BNP et al, bang on about 'indigenous' people and hold up the cross of St George as representing all that is English. Ironic, really. |
