Slimming World- Fight the flab on Fab?

Nottingham/Leicester

I noticed the old threads on this were very old so thought I’d start a new one.

Note: it’s not about fat-shaming or saying being thin is important or the only way to be happy. Everyone will be happy with a different body composition, it’s just that I’m not happy with mine as it is today.

I’ve just took the decision to start this tomorrow. I would say today but I’ve eaten so much shit today, I absolutely don’t need dinner. Basically, I saw my latest photos and didn’t like what I saw. I’m aware there are bigger chaos about, but I’m not happy as I am so I owe it to myself to change.

I know detractors to SW say, “oh but they tell you a banana is good, but a mashed up one is bad”. I get that flaw but the idea is you can’t accidentally eat 7 bananas, but you could if they were all puréed in one pot. If I mash up one banana and eat that then I’ll treat it as eating 1 banana.

My weigh in is every Tuesday, so figure I’ll post here tomorrow and every subsequent Tuesday with (hopefully) the numbers going down, for some accountability and maybe encourage other people that also like food too much and we can try and support each other to be slightly slimmer Fabbers.

Current weight: 16st 2lb

Honestly I’ve tried almost every diet going over the years- Atkins, Keto, slow carb, calorie counting, low fat. You name it, I’ve probably done it. The only one I ever lost weight on that stayed off was calorie counting when I went from 17st 9lb to 13 st 7lb in 4 months, but I was 20 and did horrendous volumes of exercise all week that I just don’t have time to commit to now.

I know SW isn’t perfect, but it’s simple and not overly restrictive, which is what I need at the moment with so much other stuff going on and not bags of time like I had over a decade ago.

That’s a great first step! It’s always the hardest but over time you’ll work into a routine and then it’ll become second nature. My only advice would be to couple it up with walks etc whenever you can.

I started the gym back in August and weighed 141kg (22st 01) and now down to 135kg(21st 02) as of 11th Nov, my next weigh in is on Wednesday so who knows now!

Good luck on your journey OP. Remember it is a marathon, not a sprint. You will have some great weeks and some not so great weeks - whatever week you have don’t let it go to your head and you will be fine.

Hey OP, well done for taking the first step. Ignore the noise of this diet works better than this diet. You know what works best for you. You're starting at the most difficult time of year (well at least it is for me), so don't be too harsh on yourself if you don't loose what you want to over the festive period.

And remember it's a marathon not a race. Good luck

OP that’s great that you have a plan! Ignore everyone saying ‘this is better’ or ‘try this’. Doesn’t matter what you do, someone else will always know how to do it better and it’s annoying.

I have friends who had great success with slimming world. They got the results they wanted and changed their lifestyle to allow time to properly cook and prepare meals and be more mindful about what they’re eating.

Keep us updated. I might join you in the new year!

I am so proud of anyone who starts a new journey in life.

If you have chosen now is the time to start a weight loss journey then you have my full support.

I will look forward to seeing your updates.

I have been through this journey too but unfortunately due to ill health but the weight back on. It will come off in time.

I would recommend taking your measurements. Your upper arms, thighs and wrists, all of it. Some months u may lose nothing but find u have lost an inch or more all over.

There is a lot of negativity around SW but if it works for you then do it.

Remember its not about will power its about choice power

Good on you! 😊 Feeling that desire to change can be ridiculously difficult, especially if you're stuck in a routine with certain foods.

I live behind two corner shops, each with their own selection of junk foods. Even when I'm on a weight loss spree, I still have to fight the automation of going in there and buying whatever. I still autopilot occasionally, which is mostly due to ADHD and just not being aware of what I'm doing. 😅

But as mentioned, you don't need fancy diets, meal replacement or supplements. The formula to lose weight is incredibly simple: eat less, exercise more.

Any neutrally-aligned nutritionist will tell you that you don't need anything else except willpower. You can get everything your body needs from normal food.

Starving yourself or fasting are never smart ways to lose weight either. You're denying essential fuel for exercise. You wouldn't try to run a car without petrol. Your body is exactly the same.

Don't deny yourself something nice now and again either. You might end up just craving it more.

Cutting out certain foods, like gluten, wheat or whatever fad comes next, is also pointless unless you've been told by a doctor to do so. Again, a good nutritionist will say this too.

Losing weight can be hard, especially as you get older. So long as you want it enough and can keep the routine of eating less and exercising more going, you'll be just fine! 😊

I did try SW but couldn't get my head round them saying I could eat as much pasta and rice as I wanted which are empty calories. I've gained and lost the same several stones for the last 10 years, so I took the plunge last year and had a gastric sleeve and have now lost 8 stone and still losing. I have no interest in food now, I eat when I remember or have to. It's extremely liberating not to be controlled by a food addiction any more.

Well done OP and a good time of year as so much temptation around, stop the bad habits before they get dangerous! Im happy to join for accountability but wont be sharing my weight here, altho happy to capture losses. I have several health conditions which cause issues with mobility and weight loss so my downward trajectory is very shallow! It’s taken about 10 weeks to lose 8lbs so far this time. Gone are the days when I could shift half a stone in a weekend and 5 stone in 6months.

Please please keep posting regularly with updates x best of luck to our man of the year no doubt x

Nice one. My mate did that & reckoned the first week or 2 was a bit complex when working out what he could eat, after that he got on fine and loved it as he could actually eat more than he used to but still lost the weight he needed to. Another mate lost lots of weight simply by walking to and from work every day, 4 miles each way, even simpler

Thanks to everyone that’s been supportive. Agree there’s lots of it that doesn’t make sense to me, like the idea that pasta and potatoes are “free”. Obviously they’re not calorie free (when you’ve been obsessed with your weight as I have, you know the calories of EVERYTHING), but my view is that who really wants to eat that much of those foods in a sitting, so it’s more sort of there to get you to eat bigger more nutrient dense meals and replace the snacking on crap.

I did see one comment about losing weight not being hard. As someone that lost 4 stone over a summer in their 20s and was, as and as the youth say, “shredded”, I can confirm it is indeed hard and trying to maintain it can make you completely miserable, as I’ve said, everyone will be happy with a different body composition. but thanks for the input all the same.

The “big shop” beckons tomorrow!

Thanks all!

Maintaining is the secret. That’s why the lifestyle eating and exercise change is the important perspective as opposed to the “diet”. The weigh loss will follow the positive lifestyle changes.

Good luck and stick at it.

So, end of day 1.

Breakfast was a bit of a flop. If should have been 4 soft boiled eggs and some raspberries I got from the market yesterday. However the raspberries had sprouted a fungal strain that man had yet to discover until today and the the dogs guilted me in to giving up one egg. Then halfway through egg #2, I remembered that I really don’t like boiled eggs so they also got egg #3.

Lunch went slightly better but it was on the fly as I was at the stable, so I had 250g of chicken and one of those “Skinny” cereal bars. I had the millionaire shortbread one, which was okay, but your mileage may vary on those bars. Also managed to track down some reduced raspberries in the local ALDI, of which I consumed all 245g for less calories than a bag of crisps. I bloody love crisps though!

Dinner came around and I’ve got the kids tonight, who reminded me I’d promised them a chippy tea

so they’ve devoured plates of chips and battered sausages , I made a lazy dinner of 200g chicken breast mixed with some chipotle paste, peppers and onions with some rice.

Now I’m writing this eating a fake muller yoghurt form ALDI and I’ll probably have a JD and Coke Zero when the kids go to bed later.

All in all, not a bad start. However it’s back to back office days form tomorrow so I need to bloody meal prep

Thanks for reading.

In order to feel full you will need protein and carbs.

I have never done a diet of any description. Just sensible food, home cooked and most importantly, portion control.

You would be surprised how much our eyeball of a portion of pasta actually is tbh.

I personally would not get low sugar foods as they compensate in other ways. Just control amount you eat of full fat.

Life is too short not to have some of the things you like e.g. choc. But I have Lindt Excellance bar in the fridge and have 1 square with a cuppa. Its all about balance.

I tend to agree, but I’m trying to limit heavier carbs to twice a day. It just makes me feel sluggish if I have them with every meal. I’m having my treat each day. The old me he got in to a habit of “a treat” being 3 bars from a multipack just because I’d gone to the shop or eating the free donut from Lidl jsut because it was free, even if I wasn’t hungry. At the moment, I’m not in a place where I can say I’ve got enough control to not eat multiple sugary things a day if I have them in, so I’m just not keeping them in the house. I’ll get there though.

Good luck OP. You deserve to feel good in yourself 💪🏻

I’ve lost just over a stone in 8 weeks by eating more food. I’ve cut down sugar because my sweet tooth was out of control. I snack on nuts (not the nuts you find in ballsacks unfortunately) and drink tons of water. But I have increased my intake of healthy natural fats. Swapped margarine for real butter, Swapped rice and pasta for root veg and cauliflower rice, have full fat yoghurt etc . I spice and flavour everything and also eat a lot of fish. It’s working for me and I’m eating really well.

I was only trying to lower my blood sugar but subsequently losing weight steadily too.

I’ve witnessed a lot of weigh loss through slimming world though so I’m routing for you 💪🏻 lots of really healthy free foods on that plan.

Whatever works for you op, I would never pay for a slimming group however, my ex mother in law has tried many in the 25 years I've known her and none of them have worked.

I recently lost nearly 4 stone (although thanks to Christmas I'm in danger of putting it all back on as "fuck it, it's Christmas" moves quite fast out of my lips these days.

All I did was get a food tracker, find out my calories I needed for the weight I wanted to lose and then count every single calorie (even booze), I rarely do exercise (apart from work, which can be quite physical), I still have crisps, odd bit of chocolate but I've swapped what I used to have for lower calorie ones and batch cooking, one of the best things we've ever done, we've saved money and we know exactly how much we are having.

Everyone does whatever works for them and I wish you well in your new journey, when you start seeing results it will spur you on more, take photos of yourself in the same thing every week as I could really see the change over the months.

Thought I’d give posting a miss for a day, less it become even more tedious than a bloke talking about the food he’s eating, already is.

Made too much rice (well, I didn’t, the kids just got offered surprise McDonalds by their uncle, and what kid is turning that down?) so I’ve eaten a lot of chicken fried rice and nasi goreng these last 2 days. Does anyone else shit their pants thinking this reheated rice dish is going to be the one that does them in, or is it just me?

Tomorrow I’m out all day, so in an attempt to combat the desire to go and eat cake at the stables cafe, I purchasing a food flask. I just forgot the bit about actually making any food to put in it…

Had a sneaky weigh-in, which had me down 3lb. Obviously it’ll be mostly water and general fluctuations, but a loss is a loss.

Honestly, I’ll never learn with the market fruit.

The dogs were disappointed that the eggs have been replaced by porridge and fruit. I feel like I almost owe it to them to get a bacon sandwich on the go tomorrow.

Rice is your friend for weight loss. As long as you cool it quickly and reheat it thoroughly you’ll be ok. I make my own egg friend rice. Love nasi goreng but haven’t made it but I did a sort of crazy special fried rice the other week and it was awesome. Have you got a rice cooker?

No, it’s on my list, but I’ve got so many kitchen gadgets and not enough kitchen space. Do you have one that you’d recommend?

Weird Jack I’ve found is making food quite spicy helps as I don’t overeat it and dotn tend to fancy more than yoghurt later on.

I’m taking the kids and they’re reformed to the cinema later, so I’ve got a ton of fruit to eat then. It’s not quite Maltesers and popcorn, though.

I’ve got a multi cooker thing that’s a pressure cooker and it does rice quite quickly for me.

Interesting with the spicy thing! Just make sure you’re eating enough to keep you satisfied so you’re not tempted to nibble on empty calories.

How did you get on at the cinema?

Wherever I lay my hat

Good for you OP. As someone whose weight has fluctuated all their life the only thing that worked for me (nearly 3 stone weight loss which proportionate to my size is a lot) was changing my lifestyle and not thinking of it as being 'on a diet'. I cut out crisps, chocolate, biscuits etc and bread, had one dry month to kick start things and ate smaller portions of exactly the same food as my family. And I started exercising. The weight came off steadily and easily. For me there is something about being on a diet - any diet - that just makes me want to cheat more as I feel restricted, and it was totally sustainable as I changed my lifestyle. Best of luck on your journey!

Good luck op. We did the SW thing a couple of years ago, started out with unrealistic goals but sticking to plan we both reached them. Very surprised but we did it. Will be starting again in the new year as once we reached our goals we kinda gave up with going to group but the pounds slowly made their way back.

For us the most important part was attending group every week it really did help and wished we was still going.

I'm slowly losing weight. I'm in no rush so I'm not doing any faddy diet. I have food intolerances, so I've had to learn which fruit and veg sets me off.

I can't eat a lot of fat or red meat for health reasons but I am low in folates so I had some recently.

A few basic meals I can make quickly have helped me, as I was starving all day and eating anything I could find in the evening.

I’ve done this a lot over the years. By the time everything and everyone was sorted, I didn’t have the energy to cook for myself, so I’d end up eating 3 bags of crisps and a bag of sweets and calling it dinner. Tonight was one of those nights, but I did at least do my own wedges in the airfryer and stuck to just the one chicken burger from the freezer.

"Good luck op. We did the SW thing a couple of years ago, started out with unrealistic goals but sticking to plan we both reached them. Very surprised but we did it. Will be starting again in the new year as once we reached our goals we kinda gave up with going to group but the pounds slowly made their way back.

For us the most important part was attending group every week it really did help and wished we was still going."

The idea of a SW group isn't for me. I found all the literature and just doing it that way. Truthfully, it’s not really SW, as I’m watching calories too. I think SW underestimate how many potatoes and how much rice and pasta I can put away.

I did do my measurements. They’ve not really moved, but it’s only been a week. Weigh in was 16st, so down 2lb from day one. I did weigh myself every day and it was anywhere between 15st 12lb and 16st 4lb, so not sure how much I truly lost, tbh.

"Weigh in day after week 1:

16st dead on. That’s probably OK. Anyone else joined in and getting on better?

That’s good! I’m down to 133kg from 141 back in August, so total down so far 1st 3lbs. "

Congratulations on your progress!
