I’m currently on an aggressive cut and have lost a significant amount of weight but now the festive season is upon us I’m in a bit of a dilemma.
I have a few of nights out planned in the next few weeks on top of all the Christmas/New Year food and drink and I’m torn between saying “fuck it” and enjoying myself or taking it easy and avoiding undoing all my hard work.
I guess my question is… what do you do when breaking your diet is almost unavoidable? |

Usually that’s exactly what I’d do but my mindset this time around has been completely different. Other than about 3 haribos I haven’t ate or drank a single thing that wasn’t in my plan for around 3 months now and I need to try and keep that discipline going until I get where I want to be. |

I think the only one where I’ve got no choice but to go overboard is my work night out, other than that I could relax the diet a bit rather than make a pig of myself. |

If you think you can have a day or two of eating all the tasty Christmas food and than immediately jump back on your diet, it really wouldn't affect your progress that much. But if you think it will make you loose your discipline and motivation and make you spiral out of control with your diet, than best avoided . |

This is my problem. I’ll have a day off then think meh I’ve fucked it up now and eat everything in sight for 2 weeks 🤣. I need to get out of that mindset! |

That’s the problem. I genuinely don’t know how I’ll be. I’ve never been this strict before so I have no idea what I’ll be like if I have a few days off plan. |

I had a similar journey to you a few years ago … but sadly have let things slip of late … I need to get back on the bike physically, and metaphorically.

I just recently had a friend who died, never really abused himself, my thoughts for a long time I’ve always been live your life because you’re going to die anyway, have a good Christmas and worry about it afterwards, I hope I’m not too morbid for this of the morning |

Thanks. The gym is only closed on Christmas Day so my training will still be consistent I’m just really worried about falling back into the habits that got me fat in the first place. |

I’m sorry for your loss and I get that perspective but I feel I’d enjoy my life a lot more if I was healthier and looked better. |

Is there a happy medium?
You mentioned in your OP about sticking to plan until you hit your target weight… that sounds really restrictive, what are you going to do when you get there? If there is a way to enjoy the foods you love while still being active, healthy and losing weight I’d look at that. |

I’ve lost a decent amount of weight and a good 6 inches from my waist. I haven’t had a drop to drink since September. |

Don’t measure your progress over a day - do it over a longer period like a week.
If you are measuring daily and you have a bad couple of days then it is easy to just give up - you feel like you have “failed” and getting back into the habit is hard. If you measure what you eat over a week then a couple of days is just a blip - that week might be slightly higher than normal but you know you can make the following week work. Consistency is key. |

I chose an aggressive cut to get where I need to be in the shortest possible time so most of the foods I enjoy have been cut out completely. Once I get there I’ll relax it a bit and eat at maintenance for a month or two and then bulk to build muscle so I can enjoy a bit more freedom then. |

I do track daily but that’s just so I can see what causes fluctuations in weight so I don’t beat myself up in future if my weight is up. It might be beneficial to track weekly over the Christmas period so I don’t completely lose my shit when I’m inevitably a couple of kg up after one or two days off plan. |

My diet is whatever is in the cupboard/fridge/freezer when I'm hungry.
I've never really been a healthy eater and have always had one of those metabolisms where I can eat stuff and not put loads of weight on.
I find not having to focus on a specific diet to be very stress relieving. 🤷♂️ |

I wish it was that easy for me. I just look at food and put half a stone on. I’ll have to eat pretty strict for the rest of my life if I want to avoid being fat and having the health problems that come with it. |

Just tell yourself you are having a mini bulk for 2 weeks same way people do mini cuts during bulking up to re-sensitise the body and enjoy your Christmas mate. You can probably loss whatever you gain in over Christmas in a few weeks and be right back on track

If you're out for a meal, pick leaner or lower carb options.
If you're drinking and trying to keep the weight off vodka lime and soda (but get a pint) the soda will bloat you, but that's only temporary, and vodka is pretty low in carbs and calories. Stay clear of cocktails as a lot of them will have sugar syrup in them. |

What I do during the festive periods if I am on a cut, is to use calorie cycling, so after few days with high calories. Cheat meals have helped in the past when I’ve hit a wall but the weight is still coming off relatively fast so that’s why I’m reluctant to eat over maintenance for more than a day or two. |

This is probably the most logical answer and I can’t believe I didn’t think of it. As long as I’m not over maintenance over the course of the week my weight shouldn’t go up at all. I don’t necessarily need to be in a deficit. |

A day or two is fine, you won't do much damage. Just hop back on the diet afterwards. Only advice would be to not over correct with additional cardio or an aggressive deficit - it's not needed and can trigger bad habits... |

Luckily I have no problems in the getting sex department. I’m doing this for me and me only. A few things have happened in my life recently that made me want to be healthier and I’ve already surpassed my initial target so I decided to keep going. |

I agree with that. I don’t punish myself if my weight is slightly up. I just stick to what I’m doing because it’s working well so far. |
