You’re not considered awol until you’ve been away from work for 24 hours.
That was the rule in my day
After that it depended if and when you returned
On one side you could expect a visit to any known addresses they had from the police
On the other hand if you returned on your own free will then it would be investigated
The forces had a separate entity where anything disciplinary would be passed to, to make sure the sanction fitted the offence
That was what happened in my time.
AWOL is normally for a reason

I took a lad back to base, who was AWOL and was really concerned about him, after bumping into him, in distress. I'd hoped he'd cope but at least he had ended his absence, preventing things getting worse. |

Reason being an arrest by civilian police. |

In my day you were charged and possibly sent to a military prison. There you were beasted for your sentence until you broke. Many were promoted soon after returning to regiment because they were super fit, super disciplined and good soldiers! |

"People who are in or have been in the military!
What happens when a serving member goes AWOL?
Like if they didn't turn up for work... What's the consequences?" 252 charge, my mate went AWOL for 18 months he met his future wife whilst working cash in hand on the trawlers in Hull, he gave himself up and got 18 months in MCTC Colchester and soldier on, he ended up doing his full 22 years finishing as a Sargent Major. |

"What would happen if you got charged and sent to civilian prison... Would they add time on for going AWOL or would the person then have to go to military prison after? As a separate sentence." You'd serve your sentence in a military jail or MCTC Colchester if you'd received a long sentence, if you'd committed a civilian crime you'd be handed over to the civilian authorities, the length of your sentence doesn't count as service so if you'd signed for 3 years and been in jail for 3 months you'd do 3 years 3 months

In my day you could do up to 28 days in your own nick
Anything over and you were farmed out for someone else to piss you about
Anything serious was a trip to Colchester
On the upside, the guard marched you to the cookhouse before anyone else got in , so it wasn't all bad |
