I've never seen it as not a fan of that genre.

But I can't see why it's not a Xmas film.

When I was a kid, films like The Great Escape or Guns of Navarone were on tv at Xmas and there's no link to Jesus or Christmas in either film.

It is. It's just as much a Christmas movie as any of the other pretenders that are so called traditional.

So many of the against reasons for Die Hard apply to those other movies too. So too are the for.

If you like then sure. If you don’t think it is then sure that’s fine too.

The issue seems to be nobody can just say ‘I consider die hard a Christmas movie’. They seem to have to make it their whole personality. It’s the new ‘I’ve never seen a single episode of game of thrones’. I bet the Venn diagram of those two groups of people is a circle

Absolutely!!

It’s set during a Christmas party at Nakatomi Plaza, and the fella in the lift with the note “ha ha ha, now I have a machine gun” is wearing a Santa hat lol..

I suggest to drop everything and watching right now! Tell your boss, they will understand and probably give you time off at double pay.

You may have a point, but only because it also stars Samuel L Jackson

I thought after watching it, if that was a by the numbers action film starring Jean Claude Van Dam you'd think, "yeah that was all right."

Problem is its a Die Hard film and its utterly shite compared to the first 4. Well first 3 at least.

It was released in summer originally so that argument doesn’t stand. Also gladiator 2 is in my cinema, that’s not a Xmas movie.

Not saying die hard isn’t but that argument is flawed lol

If gladiator was set at chromas and had a chrimas tune at the end, then it would be a Christmas movie. Although I don't think the Romans would be celebrating xmas

I feel duty bound to comment on this one! 🤣 ...There are two types of people in this world, those who think Die Hard is a Christmas movie, and those who are wrong!!!

Turns out, it's not JUST a Christmas movie, it's a Harry Potter movie too!! OK, bare with me...

So, he sneaks around a big tower at night, hiding from Alan Rickman; it's a Harry Potter movie!

It's a Wonderful life was set to be released in the following February, it was released early because they panicked and needed a movie to use as Oscar fodder (of which it did terrible).

The director never intended it to be a Christmas movie despite any Christmas themes.

The major factor behind the "tradition" for the movies Christmas viewing slot is that it became public domain. It's copyright ended and every TV channel/station/network could rerun the shit out of it over and over for free.

Home Alone (and it's sequel) both released November.

It boils down to what you mean by a Christmas movie.

A movie set at Christmas - 100% it is

A movie with a Christmas song in it - again it passes

A movie with *that* festive feeling - not for me

I consider it a Christmas adjacent film. But that’s because I refuse to watch Xmas films outside of December. And sometimes I want to watch die hard in the summer!

Die Hard is about a man trying to win back the affections of his estranged wife at Christmas. After a few whacky adventures, they get back together.

It's basically a love story which is what chrismas is all about.

"‘Die hard is an action thriller SET AT CHRISTMAS TIME’

Yeah, a Christmas action thriller.

Just as Violent Night is a Christmas action comedy

Nightmare before Christmas is a hybrid Christmas/Halloween animated horror

Christmas is just a setting in all movies. It's a plot device and background theme, not much more than a mcguffin. Very few "Christmas movies" need Christmas to remain as a movie. You can replace Christmas with almost any seasonal holiday and it would still work - one of the arguments used against die hard.
