We're you in a school nativity and what did you play?
Jump to: Newest in thread
I was a angel - obligatory white sheet with head hole cut out, and gold tinsel wrapped round my waist, and plonked on head.
Narrowly missed out to playing Mary one year. Got another part playing the Innkeepers wife... Fell off the stage
Many times bunged in the chorus line with a stripey tea towel on my head. |

I was the front end of the donkey in our primary school nativity. Went on to play Tiny Tim in the Christmas Carol the following year so I obviously impressed. |

I went to a really small school, with shortage of boys, so one year I was a shepherd in one scene and a wise man in another.
(Swap the tea towel for a cardboard crown, the dressing gown sufficed for both it seemed.)

I have no memory of playing a particular role in a nativity play whilst in school.
Although I do recall the feeling of excitement hoping to catch a glimpse of my parents, and the feeling of sadness when it didn't happen. (Sadly my mum had died that year and my step father didn't come to see me).
To not dwell on sadness, I do remember how hard I worked to practice the songs and I learned everybody's lines.
When I had my own kids I knew the little things that were so very important to children, and I shared and celebrated all of it with them.
So whichever role you did or didn't play, I just hope you lived your best life on that school stage - just like I did 💝

"I don't remember there being a nativity play when I was at primary school."
None at any of the schools I attended. Must be a fairly recent thing.
I worked in a secondary school for 23 years and there was nearly always an entertainment production of some sort before Christmas but not of a religious nature. |

"Believed I was an angel in my first one. I was a snowflake! Also been a log 🤣 Never was the drama student, clearly.
A log! That’s AMAZING. 🪵 "
Can I just say I was a wave in my primary schools Noah's ark play 🌊 |

"Always the narrator ..i hated it. Tried to convince my teacher i couldnt read one year so i could have a better part lol..didnt work "
I'm the opposite. I'd much rather be the narrator than in the play |

At the schools i went to, there was always a nativity play. As i got older there were other productions too.
I played a wise king (gold i think was my gift). Another year Joseph. Another year an Inn keeper.
Starring roll though was Grandpa in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in middle school. |

"When in reception I was Mary. It was a disaster. Joseph wouldn't hold my hand and baby Jesus's head fell off in my arms and rolled into the floor.
I was never given the role of Mary again. "
Did anyone film it? That sounds like it'd be worth 250 quid on You've been framed! |

Gosh no, so long ago I'm not sure many people had such things then. Probably just as well!
After that I was always an angel. No doubt a much better casting |

Because I was a loud kid and a confident reader me and Angie were always the narrators, which meant we said loads but had to wear school uniform, no tinsel halo or teatowels on heads for us.
After a couple of years we decided to sabotage it, weaponised incompetence style (break enough plates and nobody asks you to do the dishes).
Angie had Mary laying Jesus in the manger before they'd knocked at a single inn, I had the wise men turning up before the first verse of Little Donkey.
The following year we figured we were odds-on for angels or stars, sheep at the very least. No. I was a tree and Angie was a door.
Never got my halo (though in the first year of secondary school I made myself a fabulously huge if slightly mangy set of wings when I played the Hoopoe in The Birds, so I don't feel too bitter. Honestly.) |

I was a shepherd once in junior school.
These days they are not allowed to do a traditional nativity for fear of offending someone,so they have construction workers, dinosaur's, Disney characters....

1971 I think I was an inkeeper, I vaguely remember slamming the door in someone's face.
I also vaguely remember telling Mary and Joseph to watch out for a gang called Hamas and don't go to Munich for a holiday next year and big up to Golda.
I love nativity productions they make me feel all warm and Christmasy.
Keep the tradition alive in schools I say. Big up GOLDA!
