Which beach in the UK holds the best childhood memories for you
Jump to: Newest in thread
Technically I didn't spend my childhood (or teens) in the UK but in Jersey.
Of course,we had a fabulous selection of beaches and my childhood featured La Mare which was a safe and tidally fascinating beach and low water gulley system.
Later, Ouaisne and then St Ouen's bay became favourites.
However, Petit Portelet, a
rocky shingly bay behind Gorey Castle held a particular attraction as the tide didn't go out very far there, mainly up and down. Its main attraction was that it was not well known, nor was the path to it. I was a very lucky boy and did plenty of canoeing and fishing there as well. |

Do you ever visit nowadays? We do occasionally. We’re surprised it’s never become an official naturist beach. It’s secluded enough. I know Morfa is just down the bay. |

Littlehampton: you had a choice between the busy public side complete with funfair, ice cream etc and then over the river for the dunes, private and wild. As a kid could pretend it was a desert island. |

"Chesil. "
I appreciated Chesil as an adult but as a child Weymouth was my second home ❤️ My extended family were from there and I spent my school holidays running free on those glorious sands, hanging out in arcades and riding donkeys!

So many beaches in my childhood and teenage years but the one that holds the fondest memory is 3 Cliffs Bay. Beautiful place, my daughter was just a little tot and my son just walking. Beautiful warm sunny day, beach nearly empty. Feeling good, incredibly happy, Kids running around naked, adult drinks, sandwiches, Bliss.
My daughter came running up the beach from where she was playing and said “Daddy, I found a number two”.
Damn, I thought, checked her little hands were clean and cast around for plastic bag and grabbed a little sand spade and headed down the beach to clear the poop away, my little girl pulling me along by my finger. Wife came along too. We got there ready to deal with the unpleasant task and she squatted down and pointed at the sand with a chubby little digit…
“don’t touch…!” panicked the adults..
It was a purple plastic number 2 from one of those letter and number magnetic sets that go on fridge doors…
Adults rolling around laughing. I still have that plastic ‘number 2’ mixed in with beach treasures and shells collected over many years and it reminds me of that perfect beach day 🥰 |

It’s a running family joke… many number 2’s found on beaches over the years 😂
My favourite Twitter feed is the Scottish Beach Project. Some truly achingly beautiful beaches. |

MADERIA Wherever I lay my hat |
Achmelvich in the Highlands. We would go there regularly and there wouldn't be a should there but us. Pristine white sand, swimming in the icy sea, the windbreak blowing down constantly, using the poor dog's bowl to make sandcastles and the freedom of exploring the headlands totally alone. Happy times |

Barry Island. I used to go there every summer. My grandparents lived there and I used to love going to see them.
I hadn’t been back there in my adult life, until 2 years ago. I welled up remembering memories from a lifetime ago . |

Prestatyn - my nan lived there
Three Cliffs Bay, Gower - camped there every year as a kid.
Porthcurno, Cornwall - too many chapters of my life have a moment at Porthcurno (and it gets bonus points for the Minack Theatre)
...and MYB is so right about Barafundle; best beach in Wales, so worth the walk to get there. |

Bournemouth, Alum Chine… we lived in Bournemouth and had a beach hut… as a child playing cricket on the sand, swimming and surfing… then meeting my now wife in a very tiny blue bikini… still super sexy after all the years…
Second choice Swanage and Studland in equal measure… |

It's doubtful anyone will have heard of mine, a lot of the time there it was just my family there but the beaches at Boddin Point, one side is a sandy beach and cliffs with a shallow cave, the other is a stoney beach with a tidal pool at low tide where we collected buccys (or winkles to those in England). Spent nearly every day of my parents 2 weeks off together there when it was sunny and in the 80's summers were long and hot, even in Scotland. |

Weymouth Dorset, we used to have one day a year out, six of us kids fook we used to look forward to that day all year. 3 or 4 evenings a year we would go to Charmouth for a swim after a days bale hauling. I think we mostly have too much too easily these days to fully appreciate many things. |

I've not been for a very long time, since my son was little and he's now 22! |
