There is an area of cold air sat over the country with another area of warm, wet air coming in of the Atlantic. Where the two meet, the moisture in the wet air mass is cooling, condensing and freezing to fall as snow. Eventually the warm air mass will push the cold air away to the north and east so the snow turns to rain and the temperature goes up.
It's a pattern that we experience quite regularly here in the west during winter.
