I sell as a private seller on eBay. Recently there have been 3 items of mine which have not been delivered. I paid for tracked and signed for so should be covered for this. However, after making my claim all they have sent me are 4 stamps for each item. The combined value of the items sold and 'lost' is £150. Royal mail ask me for evidence of the cost I paid to acquire those goods, NOT the value I sold them for. What can I do?
There are many cases where there is no proof of purchase. What if you sold an autograph or a painting you produced or sold an old antique handed down to you? What do you do then?
4 bloody stamps! Is there even any point in paying for enhanced protection when posting unless you have a receipt or bank statement to prove cost?
Any experiences and advice gratefully appreciated. |

Royal Mail lost a letter (1st class signed for) that resulted in one of my kids not getting their school placement on time.
Now how do I value this? I questioned them but to not avail.
I got 8 stamps though, so not sure how my response was helpful to you OP.
Hope someone can help, on a serious note. |

I used to be an exclusive ebay seller for my business, for the most part everything went OK and I did have a couple of items not arrive so claimed - Never once asked for original receipt and accepted intrinsic value without issue. These items were £500+ each too.
I swear the minimum refund was 6 stamps plus postage for no delivery and no evidence of value though.

I've been waiting on a package from a well known adult performer for some time now and 3 weeks later it still hasn't arrived absolutely annoyed because it was only coming from Yorkshire it shouldn't take 3 weeks to get from Yorkshire to Kent they keep saying it's in delivery but no one can find it |

It does seem ridiculous how they can lose something that's tracked... unfortunately they're like insurance companies they'll do anything and everything to not pay out...I ordered some boots on eBay last year...I followed the tracking..I stayed in on the day they were due to arrive nothing...next day i look at the tracking...item being returned as could not be delivered...so the seller then had to payout to resend them..

I've just looked at the post office's RM compensation page and it doesn't say anything about having to show acquired cost. You can buy consequential loss to cover up to to £10k, but all it says is, "You’ll need to provide the receipt for purchase as well as proof of the value of the indirect loss to make a claim"
Ask them why they are wanting proof of cost of goods when their site doesn't state it is part of the claims process - if so direct you to it.
Ask them to investigate and report back on where the items were lost - Post office, depot, delivery?

That's very bad, it's hard enough as it is without having items lost. Unfortunately they make it as difficult as possible to claim compensation in the hope you'll not have time or you'll give up. Just keep on and threaten them with going to the ombudsman (the postal redress service). K. |

I sold 2 perfumes in 1 package. Buyer received package but upon receipt saw that the box had been tampered with. The slimmer bottle had been slid out and taken leaving a larger bottle still inside which he took delivery of. He took photos of the package before signing in front of the postie as witness. This was sent tracked. Another aftershave sent only via signed for still shows it is on the system but not got to destination. This was nearly 4 weeks ago now. Took a risk on signed for instead of special delivery as I offered free postage and that would have been a tenner and that branch didn't offer tracked. The buyer wanted the item before going away on holiday so had to post that day.
Third item was an old iPod. It had been customised so difficult to measure value other than market value of what customers are willing to bid up to. I decided to write this one off as they aren't going to pay anything for rarity value.
Some RM policies found online:
Evidence of the actual loss must be provided to enable Royal Mail to determine the value of the contents of a packet. Such evidence might be original receipts, bank or credit card statements, details of age, paypal record, invoices, manufacturing costs, auctioneers valuation, and repair costs in the case of damage claims. This list is not exhaustive and is for illustrative purposes only.
Where an item is lost or damaged beyond repair then actual loss is the amount it cost the customer to acquire, purchase or manufacture the item subject to condition, age and depreciation. Where an item is damaged it is the cost of repair. No additional payment will be made for the reduced value of the repaired item.

With the fragrances, when sending certain items like fluids, it has to be declared by attaching a label stating what is inside. I guess this gives any prospective thief a heads up. When sending electronics with batteries, this is also necessary. Not sure if it is if the battery is built in but the counter assistant stuck one on anyway when I sent it. I am guessing if we fall foul of these requirements they will use it as an excuse to void any wrongdoing and blame the customer instead for breach. So their guidelines appear to be assisting thieves to target items and they won't do anything about it. In some cases it is impossible to prove our cost to acquire. Someone sent some old gold to a pawnbroking company. They paid for enhanced compensation. RM asked them to prove the value once it was lost. Their gold was decades old. Even if they had original receipts which is an unlikelihood, it would have been a far lower cost from the 90s. Proof of valuation from the pawnbroker did not constitute proof of value they responded with. Have some stamps! |

I sell Gold nuggets in the same way, track & Trace next day delivery before 1pm.
I had received payment via PayPal and sent off the goods which never arrived, the insured value was £260 which both PayPal receipt and confirmation from the person who purchased both confirmed.
After about 6 weeks of dispute I received £230 back from royal mail with a lot of hassle.
Track and trace proved that the letter was received at village Post Office but then disappeared!
I was not requested to produce a receipt proving its value but required proof of sale.
I have never used that village post office again. |

Would you mind sharing which steps you took to get this claim sorted in your favour? Whilst the money I lost is significant, it won't affect me. But it is the principle which bothers me. I think I made 3 claims last year and I didn't even get a response, not even the stamps! Parcel force were late by a week in delivering an item I paid to arrive next day by so the buyer cancelled the sale as it was no longer needed and I had lost £30 in postage costs.
This isn't isolated to Royal Mail either who are deemed to be less worse than other courier companies. Evri and Inpost lockers have been subject to theft on a regular basis. Fortunately I managed to get both refunds on both occasions but I never ordered again to that locker. My cousin had same thing occur but they tell her to refer to the retailer who told her to refer to payment provider. But she paid using Vinted credit and so it's just sending her in a circle. |
