Its always been ok for men to have younger woman ?

Media continues to be critical of older woman-younger man relationships. This headline is typical: “Try-hard Madonna, 66, dresses like a woman half her age as she dines out with toyboy 37.” But if such relationships continue to become more common, perhaps criticism of them will fade, making such headlines a thing of the past. I can only hope. Its always been ok for men to have younger woman so should be for us woman too . xx

There’s definitely a double standard around this….

My fwb and I have been to parties together… she’s 56, I’m 32 and I’ve had people give me weird looks and make snark remarks before about it… quite pathetic really if you ask me…

Also a 7 year age gap between me and my gf too… it’s not big a deal at all so dunno why people make such a thing of this.

I was once shamed at a bar by an idiot bouncer when I went with my fwb 12 years younger than I. Age gap might have looked bigger because he looks even younger! I posted about it on here at the time… I felt so bad.

I am much more confident now, but yeah, I find it sickening how women are shamed and men celebrated for having partners younger than them

It definitely was the case in the past where an older woman was shamed when with a younger man and an older man was encouraged when with a younger woman, however that is mostly maintained only by those with extreme conservative values nowadays. Now I see shaming on both sides where women like Madonna are shamed by some people and men like Leonardo DiCaprio are shamed (as predatory, creepy...) by some people.

I think maybe it does explain it to an extent. Folk naturally recoil against things that go against nature. I'm not saying I agree, just offering a possible explanation.

couple, us we him her.

People are so judgemental these days regardless of sex they are going to get abuse.

Media only reports shit like that because people who read it.

It's definitely not a one way street for this kind of thing in fact if anything older women are encouraged to date younger men with comments like "you go girl" bandied about.

The reality is as long as everyone is of legal age who gives a crap?

If someone is getting their knickers in a twist over a 20 year old dating a 50 year old I say it's their business and nothing to do with you.

I think it's more about having something in common with them that creates the problem, sex is a common denominator.

I think it's pretty equal these days. When I tell some people that the other half is nearly 10 years younger than I am. I get comments that I'm a cougar or you go girl etc. Which I find weird it's not like he's a trophy or something just the bloke I love who happens to be younger. Though would add the only people who have judged have been older than me.

I've got a really close friend who currently has a fwb a fair few years younger than her. My only concern? That she forgets her cod liver oil.

If someone wants to have sex with another, it's consensual, legal and not coercion, it doesn't really matter the age.

I can imagine years ago that they would have had a heck of a lot of stick.

The only time I really notice the age gap is when we're with the other half friends. One is dating a woman 10 years younger so there's 20 years between us. But we get along well. Just cultural references are well out of sync

Is it a rubbish statement? You're just stating exceptions, not the norm. And remember I'm just advocating for the devil, giving a reason why people in general recoil from age gap relationships. Which, by way, I would only consider where one person could legally be your biological child/parent as a age gap relationship, so upwards of 17 years.

You still didn't define old so they aren't really exceptions at that point. A woman is classed as a geriatric pregnancy from 35, that doesn't make her old ffs! Women are still having babies in their 50s and beyond.

As long as both parties are consenting adults, I don't generally see an issue with larger age gaps.

That said if the younger party is a teenager or early 20s, and the older person over 30, it does raise some concerns about manipulation and unequal power for me. But everyone is different. I was 16 and my ex husband was 24 when we got together. The age gap was never an issue and I was the more responsible adult in the relationship.

Personally, I can't imagine having enough in common with someone under 30 to want a relationship with them.

Just for you Tinkerbell, old is someone in their 50s and beyond as they're past middle age. Yes, women can give birth in their 50s but very rarely is it natural and is at great risk to themselves and their child. So, nature.

I don't think it HAS been OK for older men to date younger women

More common yes, but still frowned upon

I do think, however, that it is becoming more common for older women to date younger men

Just look at the rise in terms like 'cougar', whilst guys get called out for being old perves for preferring younger women

Overall though, it always astonishes me how many people get their knickers in a twist over mixed age relationships between consenting adults

There is always a suggestion of there being a power dynamic there or the older party having 'money' which is where the attraction lies for the younger

It kinda cheapens the situation for those in these relationships
