I love spicy food - I'm the person who will always order the hottest thing on the takeaway menu in order to satisfy my capsaicin cravings. I also like cooking spicy food - I have my own signature chilli-con-carne and vindaloo recipes.
I also like spicy instant noodles. The "Bombay Bad Boy" Pot Noodle is on the tamer end of the ones I enjoy - that one always needs a couple of dashes of tabasco sauce on top of the chilli sachet to give it that certain "zing". My local shopkeeper is also aware of my hot noodle habit and has been stocking some Korean ones not normally found on these shores. It started with Buldak's "Hot Chicken Ramen" in a red and black pot - this one has a dry soup base you add with the water and a separate sauce sachet - I'd say it was about as hot as a Bombay Bad Boy Pot Noodle so nothing special heat-wise but still quite tasty. Then he found another - again labelled "Buldak Hot Chicken Ramen" but this time the pot is mostly black with some bits of red. This one is prepared differently - there is no dry soup base. You remove the sauce and seasoning sachets, pour boiling water on the noodles then poke holes in the lid to drain the water away after a few minutes. Then you stir in the contents of the sauce and seasoning sachets - this is probably the best instant noodle pot I've ever had.
Yesterday he had a new one - "Buldak Hot Chicken Flavour Ramen 2x Spicy". The pot looks almost identical to the non-"2x Spicy" variety except the packaging is completely black (it is prepared the same way). One thing I noticed when I started eating it was that it really is HOT! I mean, hot enough to set this capsaicin addict's tongue tingling. Anyway, 20 minutes after eating it I am now in some quite significant discomfort. My tongue hurts, I can't stop drooling, the inside of my mouth is burning, my oesophagus is burning and my stomach is burning. I'm sweating profusely, my vision has only just returned to normal and despite being completely straight right now I'd suck a fire hydrant off. I don't have any milk, yoghurt or ice-cream to put this inferno out with. I've drank two bottles of cold cider to try and stop the agony but they've only taken the edge off it and I can't drink any more beer due to having work tomorrow (I mean, today).
Anyway...I bought three of them. Does anyone want the other two? I'm not even sure it would be legal for me to dispose of these things in the bin... |

"Some flavours of noodles were recalled in Denmark in 2024, with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration stating that a single packet's capsaicin levels are so high that consumers risked "acute poisoning". Later, Denmark authorities reviewed the recall against Samyang Buldak 2x Spicy Hot Chicken and Samyang Buldak Hot Chicken Stew, but maintained the prohibition on Buldak 3x Spicy Hot Chicken."
What the FUCK?! Apparently, there's an even hotter version. You would have to be some kind of twisted masochist to enjoy the 2x version - I can't imagine anyone finding the 3x version edible. |
