Just chatting about this over lunch with a mate and we've all got that one time we misread the signals, made a bad decision, or circumstances got in the way that we look back on and say "if only..."

For me there are many but the one that I always think back to was my uni days. In the first year we lived in halls but from year two we were expected to sort our own accommodation.

I found myself in the handy position of being asked to make up the numbers for two groups that wanted the same 4-bed flat. There were my 3 mates where I'd get the double room as I was the only one with a gf at the time. And then there were 3 girls we all hung around with and was offered the single room.

During the negotiations one of the girls visited me in my dorm. Lizzy was hot! I mean smoking. Way out of my league and I was definitely friend zoned. But that didn't stop me dreaming about her, regularly. Pretty, petite, great figure, great fun, good company. The perfect package.

She came to tell me how important the flat was to her. How they would have to take a flat on the dodgy estate if they didn't get that one. And that I would make her so happy if I would be their 4th.

It wasn't until she'd left that I replayed the words she said, and her body language with the gentle touches of my arm, sitting next to me on the bed, tilting her head forward so she had to look up at me, Those stunning big eyes, wearing a very revealing top (for her), that I realised telling her then that I'd already signed the lease with the lads was a very bad idea... Idiot!

In hindsight, not sharing a flat with 3 girls was probably dodging a bullet but what's your "if only I..." moments?

What a missed opportunity! But - you probably would have shagged once or gone out for a few weeks, it would have ended, and then you’d have to live in the bedroom next to hers and listen to her getting ploughed nightly by some hunk from the third year.

I always think about when I was about 18-19 and was working at a supermarket. I really fancied a girl that also worked there and fantasised about her. She’d constantly catch me checking her out. Someone had a party and we ended up slow dancing (Christ when was the last time I did that?!!). She asked me for a lift home and got me to park up round the corner from her house. I was sooooo painfully shy I never made a move and it’s only in hindsight I realise she wanted me to eat her face.

Nothing ever happened after that and then I moved away. Every so often I think about her and regret my former shyness. There are many other opportunities I lost because of it and I hate that I used to be like that.

Nope. Next. There's a reason you let it go. I just live with that. I don't like being messed around so I'm quick to cut off people who do that. In the end it makes for an easier life.

A girl I fancied a while back never, i took the chance, never had the confidence I had now.

Then again my confidence really isn't all there yet so.. maybe not.

Still it's much better now.

Chatting with my mate we both agreed that if we could go back then with what we know now... That's a great superpower. Haha...

I think everyone should work in a supermarket at that stage in life just for the stories... I remember those days in the produce chiller, behind the spud mountain, on night shift...

Ahhh, it's all part of the process. Atleast you weren't a "simp" who got ripped off because someone couldn't afford her rent that month or whatever. You've got to be careful with these naughty ladies, especially the pretty ones! They know we're weak. Haha!

Oh and yes, sharing a flat with three females doesn't strike me as an amazing idea unless you have a hearing problem - in which case, it's probably ok.

Also, the constant drama, screaming, arguing, bitching, etc from young ladies can drive you to insanity. Consider yourself lucky.

😂😂😂

The fact you didn't start this take with "breaker one-nine, breaker one-nine" does lead me to question it's legitimacy but I'll let it go as I know exactly how you felt...

Oh god yes... Not least that I was in a relationship, so was she and apparently besotted by her rugger bugger older bf... But still, those tits... Those eyes... Man... I'm just a mortal.

Mate, you have no idea... Over the next couple of years there wasn't a Saturday night in the Union where there wasn't a fall out with these three girls. Lizzy transferred to another uni for 3rd year and the others were always fighting each other... Definitely a bullet dodged for sure.

I’m more of the belief that if it was meant to be it would have happened these days, I used to dwell on missed chances with one that was “just right” our minds are great at romanticising how we think thinks would be and filling in blanks with the perfect ideal, the reality of it is often so much different to how we think it would have been

This is very true... Like you say, my recollection with Lizzy was that I missed the chance and she was up for it. The reality is probably very different and whilst she may well have wanted to thank me this would probably have been in the form of occasionally helping me with an assignment.

But, in a fertile imagination, it's great to imagine the possibilities and enjoy the memory of what might have been as well as what once was.

I've lived alone with three females in the past. I worked in women's environments for years. I worked only with women for a long time also.

Costa Blanca Spain...

There were a few that I (Mr) would class as "the one that got away", but only one really stands out.

20 years ago I was working up in Benidorm for the summer.

I got on really well with one of the girls I worked with and we became quite good friends, but nothing more.

She was quite a bit younger than me and drop dead gorgeous. I really thought she was out of my league.

When the job finished I moved back to my place an hour or so away and although we exchanged a few messages I didn't see her again. I knew that she was planning to return to the UK and intended to drive up to see her before she left, but didn't realise how soon.

One day I'd been to a bar watching football and got quite pissed then went home and fell asleep.

The next morning I checked my phone and saw the message from her the previous afternoon.

"Would you like to spend my last night in Spain with me? And I mean all night"

I tried to phone her there and then but the phone was off. She was probably on the plane.

I tried the number a few times over the following few weeks but it was never on. I guessed she had changed her SIM card for a UK one.

Almost exactly a year later I met the current Mrs so I suppose it worked out for the best.

Still wonder what might have been though.

I’ve been there OP. Sometimes you just don’t read between the lines. It happens.

For me the one that got away was more an issue of me not asking her out because she was 20 and I was nearly 30. The age gap at that particular time of life just felt like too much for me. I remember thinking if she was 30 and I was 40 it wouldn’t be an issue.

She was gorgeous, kind and we had the same goofball sense of humour. I used to work with her and one time a client who was a notorious arsehole to deal with wanted to make another complaint to head office she gave him the phone number to Dominoes Pizza that we used to order from on the last Friday of the month. He actually found it funny and lightened up after.

I had her as a friend on Facebook and I often thought about asking her out years later. That was until she posted a picture of her sonogram and a few weeks later an engagement ring.
