So how is your week going with your sports training? What are you training for? Would love to hear what sport you enjoy doing or used to enjoy. Are you injured and working your way back to fitness, or even a retired sport enthusiast. Let's get chatting and supporting each other.

For me, I am increasing my running distances and strength. I am a returning runner coming back from an ACL and meniscus knee reconstruction. I go to the gym 6 days a week, I have a weekly training session with my personal trainer who is also a fellow runner. I am also trail & road running and seeing the benefits of zone 2 training. I also walk our dog daily and he joins me for a trail run once a week. I am loving the fact that I can run again 🥰

Sadly tweaked my calf while running on Monday, so resting that for a week. I have done 3 gym sessions though, and some easy walking.

Zone 2 training, is that Mafetone? I had a lot of success training according to Maf a few years ago

My season is over now. Last mountain bike event and race was in October.

A couple more motorbike events left but that's it.

Season starts again in Feb so not much of a gap.

I'll likely stick to cardio work. I'd like tobdo more gym work but haven't got time/good enough routine for it

I'm just starting to ramp up my mileage in preparation for an ultra over the South Downs in April.

I've had a couple of injuries lately so just gradually getting back into it.

Oh gutted for you but you know you're doing the right thing by easing off running for this week.

I will read up on Mafetone. Many people do Z2 training, my husband has seen a benefit for himself and now I do it and it definitely works.

Is that the Centurion event? Despite growing up in the SE, I've done almost nothing in the South Downs. Walked a lot asking the North Downs way but that's all. It is tough balancing the need to increase mileage and not get injured but April is a good long way away still. What will be your target weekly mileage for your longest weeks?

What sort of injuries are you experiencing? What's the distance for south downs event? What's the course like? Have you run it before? ... sorry lots of questions.

Awesome! How long did that take you to do? How did you take on your fuel & hydration etc? Was this at home or in a gym. Really interested to find out how you approach such a task.

Wow, that's some row. Running/walking those kinds of distances is hard enough. Sitting in the same spot, repeating the same movement is a whole other level. Amazing.

Ooh it's exciting to have an event to look forward to. What's bootcamp like? We attended a class once with an instructor that was like a 12 year old female Hitler screaming instructions at us. In fairness she was excellent and we were awful 🤣

Currently I walk 5 miles a day. Whilst walking I pass a park which has an out door gym. I do 30 pull-ups (3x10) and 30 dips (3x10). This is my daily routine and takes about 2 hours altogether.

Depends on my shifts on how far I walk in a day. I can easily be out walking for over 2hrs a day. I live beside a big country park and also woodland down by the river Clyde so this is where I go most.

Years and years ago when my Dad was alive he used to to be involved with historical reenactment. I never did any fighting but know for a fact begging a sword with chainmail and passing on is bloody hard work.

Oh I love this! How did you both get into it? You must have great upper body and core strength.

My upper body and grip strength is awful. My PT was even laughing at me when I couldn't hold my grip on 14kg dumbells when doing RDL's 🤣

Continuing the long journey of getting my 5k running time down to under 20 mins again. Frustrated by long working days (making mid-week evening training less likely) and the occasional strained calf when I push on. However, it’s certainly getting closer to 21 mins again which is a start. Check back in 6 months time!

When anyone says how amazing my running ultra distances is, I always explain that running distance is far easier to do than running fast. I've never managed to get below 21 minutes on 5k and I'm nowhere near that page at the moment. It is sooooo hard to get that kind of speed.

Good luck

How long is your training plan for? Or is it a week 1 & week 2 rotation type of thing? If you have hit a plateau is that in performance or results? I find the same routine can get boring, mixing it up may benefit you.

Yes I’m currently a 1st Dan, in our club there are 10 Dans, but you’ll be lucky to ever meet a 10th Dan Black Belt in this country because of the time it takes to learn, what’s involved is more techniques on top of the current level of knowledge, once you become a black belt in our club, it automatically qualifies you two become a teacher (sensei) 😊

"Love my concept rowing Did a virtual row in memory of my friend we did the Devizes to Westminster canoe race 126 mile in one go I did it on a concept rower

Would love a go at the longest row world record but more training needed yet though

Wow, that's some row. Running/walking those kinds of distances is hard enough. Sitting in the same spot, repeating the same movement is a whole other level. Amazing.

I love things that challenge the mind as well as the body . It took me 22 hours and 8 mins to do the 126 mile . It’s a lot harder on the concept if you stop you stop no coasting along on the water .

Love all the ultra runs people are doing too I have done a few .great everyone so active

Love a dog walk too but that has to involve coffee and a cake lol

Lol jk, been in the gym and back to week 1 of my program. Hit a bit of a plateau recently and wondering if I should switch it up or stay the course to break through it 🤔

How long is your training plan for? Or is it a week 1 & week 2 rotation type of thing? If you have hit a plateau is that in performance or results? I find the same routine can get boring, mixing it up may benefit you.

Mrs"

So it's a 11 week plan with 1rm testing on week 10 and reload week after with 1 week of upper/lower and 1 week of full body. It's more performance in results with weight increases not happening all that often

"We've got sword (Medieval arming/ falchion/ longsword/ great sword) training on Saturday

Not officially recognised as a sport, but Dave competes in open tournaments.

Oh I love this! How did you both get into it? You must have great upper body and core strength.

My upper body and grip strength is awful. My PT was even laughing at me when I couldn't hold my grip on 14kg dumbells when doing RDL's 🤣

Mrs"

We run a Medieval Reenactment society, and liked watching tournaments then one day Dave entered.

When our guys reach a decent standard, we teach them how to handle swords without having to grip them tightly or needing a lot of strength. (Good stamina helps though)

I am no PT but how about changing something such as the exercise type or repetition? Sometimes a slight tweak kicks starts a change. I would monitor exactly what I'm changing and measure it over time. Just an idea

I regularly play silly blighters, fast and loose and away from home.

Sometimes play hard to get and long term aim is to play the field.

Played in the field at Eureka lots of times.

Had a bit of an injury, so couldn't do weights or stuff at the gym for 2 weeks. I have still maintained my running though. Back in the gym tomorrow for first time in a few weeks, will take it slow and easy and get back into the routine of things.

Pissed me off. But I listened to my body, and decided to rest. I've done it in the past where I've not listened to my body and made injuries worse.

And thank you. I appreciate that 😃

I've also been actively people watching and fending for the elderly.

I don't mind not having to go to the loo. It's a bit of a nuisance when trying to wheelchair along with the bag and tube getting tangled and currently need to slide board from bed to wheelchair and it get yanked

I'm also well ahead in the cup-a-soup consumption sprint

"Continuing the long journey of getting my 5k running time down to under 20 mins again. Frustrated by long working days (making mid-week evening training less likely) and the occasional strained calf when I push on. However, it’s certainly getting closer to 21 mins again which is a start. Check back in 6 months time!

Don't rush it, keep going as you will get there. Lighter evenings in spring may help with mid week evening runs too.

Mrs"

What a lovely thread this is. Nice to get encouragement like this (and from both Mrs and Mr). Many thanks.

All over the place! Northwesr, , Southwest

Hello my dear! It's fabulous to see you on the road to a proper return to form after such a long time 😊

I'm strength training at the gym 5-6x a week. It most certainly pays off in terms of energy levels, vitality and when I view myself in the mirror😁

I considered adding some running to the mix, but the weather, time of year, and lack of availability scuttled that idea.

Hello! 😀

Aww thank you so much for your kind words. I'm so in my happy place now and Strava stats are improving , I even nabbed a course record yesterday on a trail run 🥳

Looks like you are in the right mindset too. Fantastic effort with your strength training. It's so motivational when you notice improvements for yourself.

You could always throw in an occasional run when you feel like it.
