No, you don’t. You can get point of lay birds fairly cheap. But it’s good to have a good area for them to graze. They’ll peck it down pretty quickly. Depending on how many in your house hold and how often you use eggs, two or three birds should suffice.

I have a cock with my hens, he’s lovely, but is quite rough sometimes, hens tend to lay more eggs with a cockerel, but if I had a choice, I’d just have hens

That’s kinda what the males do. If a male is working properly in your hens they’ll be missing feathers, etc. if your hens all look pretty and theres a cock in there, he’s not doing his job 🐓

As far as I am aware the hens will need inseminating for them to produce eggs, that's usually how nature works.

Btw, it doesn’t work out cheaper to have hens, plus they go on strike sometimes & don’t lay, the nice thing about your own eggs, you know it’s cruelty free & they have a good diet

Not true. Hens are terrible cooks.

My time has come!

No you don’t need a cock

You do need at least 3 hens as pairs will scrap, plus if one dies then you will have issues integrating another

They will be the most expensive eggs you’ll ever eat, but also the best. If you totally free range them, say goodbye to your lawn

Not at all. You only need a cock if you want chicks.

Depending on the breed of hen you’ll get anywhere between 90-340 eggs a year

They go off lay in winter unless you provide artificial lighting (personally I let my girls rest), and while moulting.

If you live in an urban area, check your deeds. Many houses have covenants that prohibit keeping livestock. Your neighbours might complain.

No and I'd advise against it. They can be very aggressive birds and the neighbours will definitely complain.

Our daughter still has a scar on her face where one of our cockerels attacked her.

This might not be a good idea so might give it a miss and get the eggs from the nearby farm instead. Though I do like chickens

La la land

We have chickens, we have had a cock in the past and he was as mild mannered. The worst bully we had a hen and she was vicious as anything.

I'd say it would depend how close your neighbours live as in the summer they start crowing 5 or earlier.

Would recommend hatching some though, chicks are the cute. But the quail we hatched this year though were beyond cute.

In our naivety we once advertised a black male chicken for sale as

'a big black cock, a beautuful bird'.

I have laying hens. No cockerel.

Amazing eggs

But you do have a”pecking order” within the hens where one is the boss

Missin’ Yo’ Kissin’

Might be good for the hens protection wise from foxes & local cats if you dig me?

Good for the rooster so he ain't lonely...?

Definitely don't get a cockatoo - can they stand the climate here?

You don't want to end up being a flaming Galah either....

Make sure they are secure from foxes. Foxes can dig and squeeze through the smallest gaps. Good luck op!
