What would gents go with to a particularly high brow gathering? Ladies your opinions of course matter too quite equally. Thank you.

How high brow?

If you’re in a DJ then it’s got to be a bow tie, otherwise a lovely 3 piece suit with tie will suffice. Cravat only for members of a wedding party

Tie or if it's a dj then now tie. Only wore a cravat twice in my life and don't like them.

Depends on the event and what the dress code is, usually a tie, if it's black tie , bowtie, check the invitation would be my advice

Sounds like just a suit and tie then in that case.

Tie, done with a Half-Windsor, Windsor or Four-in-Hand knot.

I've never worn a Bow Tie.

A Cravat doesn't appeal to me. It's a carbuncle around one's neck.

Tie unless the invitation specifically mentions a dress code eg white/black tie or morning dress.

I am leaning towards a tuxedo and bow tie at the mo. Not quite whether to go for flat or pleated shirt

Does the shirt have frilly cuffs?

French cuffs, not ruffles

What about an Ascot tie? Or is that also a carbuncle?

To answer the OP generally prefer ties. But obviously depends on the event and suit

Pleated with a cummerbund, flat with a waistcoat.

Yes because it has a wider blade. 🩶

And if you are going for a bow tie, either learn how to tie it, or don’t wear wing tip collar if you are going to use a clip on.

Also if you are wearing a clip on, take a real one too, drape that one round the neck when the dancing gets going and the ties come off.

Always 4-in-hand for me. Men in Windsors nearly always seem to make them huge, like they're auditioning for Grange Hill.
